Giveaway: A Strange Fire and Interview with author L.H. Cosway

A Strange Fire (Florence Vaine, #1)
A Strange Fire by L.H. Cosway
Flo has always had problems. Her stammer prevents her speech and her dad’s abuse makes her life a living hell. Not to mention she sees colours other people don’t.
When her dad decides to ship her off to live with her grandma in the sleepy town of Chesterport, Flo thinks that this is her chance for a better life. But on her very first day at her new school she is ridiculed and laughed at for having a stammer. One student sticks up for her and his name is Frank.
Frank’s body is surrounded by an aura of fire, but Flo is the only one who can see it. He lives in a foster home for troubled teenagers. Flo is drawn to him because he’s different and so is she.
Things are about to get scary, because Chesterport is not your ordinary suburban town. It’s infested by a coven of dark witches who prey on the young and the elderly. Soon Flo discovers that she’s next on their list of victims, and finds herself fighting a battle she never would have imagined possible.

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.
A girl who can read emotions finds love, mystery, adventure and a new found strength to survive when she meets a boy with an aura of fire.
--How did you get the idea for the story?
This story came to me mostly because I have always wanted to write from the perspective of an abuse survivor. Flo has lived with her father her whole life, suffering from his cruelty and violence. I'm also very interested in social phobias, and Flo's social phobia presents itself in the form of her stammer. The supernatural aspect comes with Flo's ability to read emotions through people's auras. I have read a few books that feature empaths and I wanted to create my own version. I guess that's where the story started and the other ideas grew from there.
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
I think I'd most like to have dinner with Alex, not only because he's the bachelor of the group but also because he has a great sense of humor and can be quite sarcastic at times. We'd probably have similar tastes in music and I suppose I enjoy his cynicism about the world. We could have some good conversations about what he thinks of everyone.
--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
I always make time to read, even when it might be to my detriment. I love all of Cassandra Clare's books. One of my favorite fantasy books is Green Rider by Kristen Britain and my favorite urban fantasy book is Blue Diablo by Ann Aguirre. If you read A Strange Fire, you'll notice I make reference to The Monk by Matthew Lewis, which is one of the first ever Gothic novels from the 1700's and also one of my favorites.
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
I write an Urban Fantasy series, the first book of which is Tegan's Blood. The second book in the series, Tegan's Return, will be released on May 1st 2012.

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
The book I'd most like to live in for 24 hours would have to be Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare, that way I'd get to see London in the late 1800's while experiencing the world of the shadow hunters at the same time.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
Definitely music. Certain sounds and lyrics help me to envision settings and to describe feelings and atmospheres. Some of the ones I listened to a lot while writing A Strange Fire include “Prisoners”  and “The Noise” by Regina Spektor and “Blake Says” by Amanda Palmer.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I'd like the ability to time travel, this would probably one of the most exciting super powers to have. I'm obsessed with certain periods in history, so in a fantasy world I'd love to be able to  visit them first hand.

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
I read a lot. I'd probably be a very rich person if I didn't spend so much money on books over the years. I also like to go to concerts, and I have a weakness for musical theater.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?
I'd like to thank anyone who takes the time to read my books. Having people read my stories makes all the hard work worth while. My aim is to transport you to a world where you can forget about life and get lost in the story for as long as it lasts, and I really hope I achieved that!
