Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Insurgent (Divergent, #2)
Insurgent (Divergent #2) by Veronica Roth

One choice can transform you--or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.
Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.
"New York Times" bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian "Divergent" series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

Rating: 4/5 stars and to me that means I really liked it.

So... I had already forgotten stuff, and this one picks right up where Divergent left off, so it took me a few pages to get back into the story and slowly remember little details. LOL. At first I was like who IS Tobias, then I was like DUH. I was just used to him being called Four.
Tris was a wild card in this one though. I know its guilt, fear, and the different factions warring in her head, but at times I liked her and others I wished I could smack some sense into her. She takes risks without thinking about the gain and sometimes that puts those she loves in more danger because of it. But she is still strong, and loyal. Everything she does, she does it out of love, loyalty and her view of the greater good. It is just hard though when she is taking those risks and being self sacrificing because you know that it won't go down a good road.
It was hard reading about Four and Tris in this one though. They had moments where they seemed to really belong together and then the next second they are lying to each other and constantly hiding things. So I am torn because I overall really like Four and he is a bright spot for me, and I know I can't expect anyone to be perfect especially in a world that is so torn, but there are some moments where I didn't like that side of him that I saw. On the other hand, there were some very hot moments between them then more that were so sweet, so I hope we are just seeing both of the characters grow and change and that they will come out the other side.
There is some really dark stuff in this book, and more characters don't make it until the end. So it is very emotional and Tris hardly ever gets a moment reprieve.
And, oh holy traitor. I can't say much obviously without spoiling but I COULD NOT believe it. I could've strangled him. There were some that I expected, but this one. NO.
I loved learning and seeing more of the factions in their day to day and also how they respond when faced with violence and when it is time to make a stand for what it right.
The ending sent me for a loop and I can't wait for the next book.
Bottom Line: 2nd in a series that connected me more with the characters and left me wanting more.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Have you ever made a choice that shaped your life?

  1. I had a lot of trouble remembering who the characters were when I started this, too! And I have to agree, all the lying Tris did seemed silly and immature and I really didn't like her in this book.

  2. This one definitely connected us a lot more deeply with the characters. Like you, I'm really looking forward to the third book coming out this year.

I guess all of our choices, no matter how big or small, do shape our lives because we are practically living the consequences of the choices that we're making every day.

    Loved your review, Brandi!

  4. I enjoyed the first book and so I need to read this one. However, after that review, I think I'll wait for the 3rd one to be out before I dive into this one. :)

  7. I enjoyed this one a LOT more than the first. I actually had to reread Divergent in order to understand Insurgent, and Divergent just wasn't that great a second time around. But this time, I felt like the characters were more realistic, Tris was more of a person instead of a character, and I felt like there was real and true plot to this one.

And YES TRAITOR. I literally could not believe it. I had to reread that passage over again to make sure I got it right and I STILL could not believe it!

I can't wait for the third book! I can't believe we have to wait until freaking October and they still haven't even given us a TITLE yet! Wth!

  9. I remember sitting down and reading Insurgent in 5 hours, all in two sittings. I'm a HUGE fan of Divergent, and while I really enjoyed this one, I was definitely a bit wary of the romance as well. While I could definitely understand Tris and her stupid decisions, just because she was flawed and had her issues, but I had problems with the romance. I wish that both characters had been a bit more open, and it was just hurting my soul when they fought, because I <3 Tris and Four. SO MUCH.

    Fabulous review! <3

  10. I adored Divergent and read it so fast. I was so excited when I had won this in a contest and then I did nt read it. I liked it but I didnt get into it the way I did Divergent. I am going to read it again because I want to finish it. I know 2nd books can be a bit harder to get into especially if time has passed. I was reading a book 2 and actually went back to re read parts of book 1 I felt i had forgotten so much.
    Thanks for the review :)

  12. I haven't read Divergent yet, but I have both of these books on my shelves :) I skimmed because I didn't want to be spoiled, but I can tell there are some things that I will definitely love in this and some things that might bother me. Great review, and thanks for stopping by my blog!

  13. Oh how I loved this book.... but I agree with Tris she gave me whiplash in this one. She is so strong but sometimes I just wanted to shake some sense into her. Then oh geesh those two really did spend alot of time lying to each other lol but they really are a good couple I think. Nobody is perfect.

    Great review!

  18. Great review! I think every choice we take shapes our life, it's interesting to think about that but not so much because then you are afraid to choose anything!!

Sounds like a great book. I must admit I also forgot a lot of things about Divergent, but you made me curious again.

  21. Most of the reviews I have read have agreed with you and really wanted to smack Tris. But I personally had more of an issue with Four in this one. There was that one big thing he did and he showed no remorse for it. I just hope he shows remorse in book 3 because as of right now, he's no longer one of my book boyfriends. Lol. ;)
    Great review, Brandi!

  24. Oh. My. Gosh. I love DIVERGENT! It was totally fabulous, and I totally agree about everything you said! Tris totally did blend in with the crowd, until she became that awesomesauce chick that she is today-- and she totally cemented this book into my heart. And FOUR IS AMAZING. I love him, LOL.
