I wanted to read Saving Quinton because I enjoyed the first book Breaking Nova, and I wanted to see where time and perspective would leave Nova, and if she could indeed as the title suggests, save Quinton.
It is pretty dark and gritty where Quinton is, worse than he was at the end. Getting both POV we really get in his head and see how dark it is, what leads him to continue taking drugs to get in that state of forgetfulness, where his demons don't torment him and he no longer sees Lexi's blood on his hands.
Nova really wants to help him, to see him through his rough past and come out the other side of addiction. I really appreciated where she was and the look she has even after Landon and her dad, that she can be in a place of healing. She had the best of intentions, and wanted to get their relationship to an even better place it was the summer before.
This book ends with hope, but it really does drag Quinton through the mud to get to his darkest place before he can ever even think of leaving this lifestyle of drugs to forget lifestyle. He thinks that is all that he deserves. It is downright hard to read, and my heart hurts for him seeing how he lives, what lengths he goes to try to protect Tristan as well as try to forget.
Nova is so strong, but she also knows that she is tempted at times, but she keeps her resolve. That doesn't mean that she isn't hurting for Quinton or at times thinking that it is hopeless or feeling defeated. She also gets to a rather dark place, but luckily she's realized that she can ask for and accept help and lets her mom and friend Lea be there for her. She's grown a lot, but I would have liked to see some of that. Her working for the hotline, some of her revelations, but I suppose that would have had to be its own book.
I think that Saving Quinton was realistic though. There wasn't a wave a magic wand fix. Family relationships are complicated, drugs will mess you up, and pain and trauma do not go away on their own.
Ultimately I liked the first book better because there was more romance, but I think that this book shows more determination and love because the lengths that Nova went through to get through to and show Quinton she wanted to be there for him. There were some hot moments, funny, deep, fun, and great conversation along the way, but there were also hurtful words and actions thrown in, but again, while hard to read I think it made it even more realistic.
This story did kind of leave me saying, wow that wasn't an ending. But looking back, in a lot of ways, it was good for the story, although there is lots of room for wanting the next book in your hands right as you finish.

Bottom Line: Dark but realistic story laced with hope, but seeing that you have to get to the bottom to want to climb to the top.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Have you ever felt like someone you love needed saving?

  4. This seems very intense, and I'm glad you liked it more than the first. I just get tired of the super dramatic endings, that don't feel like endings at all.
    Nice review, Brandi!

  5. I'm glad you enjoyed it even though you liked the first book better. I think that Jessica writes dual POV well, but I'm really tired of NA right now, so I think I'm going to skip this. Lovely review though, Brandi!

as for your question, yes, I have.

  8. I don't think I'm quite ready for a character that struggles with drug use. That sort of thing is always very hard for me to read.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, though.

    1. It could def be a trigger or hard to read, because it seems realistic even though never done drugs so I wouldn't completely know

  9. Is there going to be a third book?

I like that it's taken a few books for their story. Sometimes these issues are too deep to handle in one book.

  10. you know it's difficult for me to have an open ending... I'm not sure it's for me but it's intriguing.

  11. Dark and realistic with an open ending, not sure if this would work for me!

  12. I know this is one book I don't want to read. I'm testing my boundaries and all, but this just holds no interest for me. I think you are very strong for sticking through a story this dark and I commend the author for writing what sounds like a realistic account of drug addiction and reahab. I hope the next book brings you a lighter sweeter ending!

  15. I do want to give Jessica Sorensen a try I keep hearing nothing but greatness about this woman. I especially like how she seems to stay true to reality instead of giving us the magical want treatment or everything ending up nice and neat. Drug use is not something that ever ends easily! wonderful review!

  16. It's a shame you didn't enjoy this one as much as the first book. I am reading this soon myself, because I loved the first book. It will be interesting to see what I think now. Great review Brandi!!

  17. I like the sound of Nova - she seems so strong and determined! Sometimes, I feel like I wanna save someone but I also feel I have to respect the free will of everybody. I guess you could say I'm not brave enough...

    Loved your review, Brandi!

    1. Its still free will just helping them see the light because you can't save them if they really dont want it from drugs

  18. I have a huge thing for dark and gritty stories! And hey, how nice that it's the girl who gets to save the boy, right?
That alone made me add this to my TBR :) Thanks for your great review.

    Happy Valentine's Day :)
