Review: Everbound by Brodi Ashton

Everbound (Everneath, #2)
Everbound (Everneath #2) by Brodi Ashton
Nikki Beckett could only watch as her boyfriend, Jack, sacrificed himself to save her, taking her place in the Tunnels of the Everneath for eternity — a debt that should’ve been hers. She’s living a borrowed life, and she doesn’t know what to do with the guilt. And every night Jack appears in her dreams, lost and confused and wasting away.
Desperate for answers, Nikki turns to Cole, the immortal bad boy who wants to make her his queen — and the one person least likely to help. But his heart has been touched by everything about Nikki, and he agrees to assist her in the only way he can: by taking her to the Everneath himself.
Nikki and Cole descend into the Everneath, only to discover that their journey will be more difficult than they’d anticipated — and more deadly. But Nikki vows to stop at nothing to save Jack — even if it means making an incredible sacrifice of her own.
In this enthralling sequel to Everneath, Brodi Ashton tests the bonds of destiny and explores the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love.

I wanted to read this one because I enjoyed the romance with Nikki and Jack in the first as well as the premise and nothing like the second books, lol.
This one actually managed to keep going from the last and although I felt a couple of sections were a little repetitive, it kept a good pace and my attention. The roles are reversed because of Jack's sacrifice at the end of the last book and knowing the truth about where he is, Nikki searches high and low for a solution to get to the Everneath and rescue him. This isn't as easy as it may sound, and to me still kinda impossible, but she is so dedicated to trying, and just receives dead ends and bad news at every turn.
But I really admired her dedication and loyalty. I can totally feel her guilt and grief over what Jack did for her, and given how things played out, and it was her that should be there, it doesn't really get any easier for her.
This was a pretty action packed book, as Nikki tries to find Jack along with some unexpected helpers. She has to face the shades as well as some of her own fears and insecurities because there are lots of things in the everneath that feed on emotions and that will give you a skewed view of things.
The ending was wild and I have some suspicions about the changes in one of the characters and was completely taken aback by the actions of another character and if you look back over the story you see how far back the deception went and I was just beginning to gain some more respect.
I can't wait for time to read the conclusion and I am thankful it is already released.

Bottom Line: Good second book that kept my attention.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Do you believe there are any truths to the greek myths?

  1. I don't know why I haven't read this series. I know it's had lots of lovers and haters, but I love Greek mythology, and I've had the first book for a couple of years at least. And I'm sure there are SOME truths--there's always an element of truth in myth, but trying to weed out that truth? Yeah, that'd be difficult.

  2. I read and really liked the first book. I was going through a period of time where I was scared to pick up second books in a series around the time that Everbound was released, so I haven't gotten around to reading this one. It sounds like the series has held strong though. I really need to get around to reading this! Lovely review, Brandi! I agree with Jessica that there are likely some elements of truth to myths :)

  3. I hope to get to this series one day. I love retellings, and this modern day twist on the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone sounds like something I would enjoy. Glad you enjoyed Everbound as much as the first book in the series, Brandi :)

  5. I really like action packed books, and main characters that are loyal. I think we need more loyal people in the real world, so I guess that is why! I really love greek mythology <3 Ever since reading Percy Jackson I have looked into it a lot more and concluded Athena is my fave. I don't think there is any truth in it, but there is in some of the morale stories and the idea of it is pretty fabulous in itself.

  8. I am not big into mythology, but I do like a good story that doesn't require a lot of previous knowledge and is just a good story.

  11. LOL I'm glad you enjoyed Everbound, Brandi. And I'm always happy too when I'm reading a series where I don't have to wait for the last book. :)

  12. I'm glad you liked this one since I know you have been waiting for it for awhile :) I still need to read the first book! As for the question, I really like myths in general so that would be awesome if there was a bit of truth in them.

  14. I still have to start this series! Admittedly, I wasn't that attracted to this series, but since you liked this one and this one was action-packed, I'll have to pick up the first book sometime soon. Glad you enjoyed this, Brandi! Great review! As for the question...I love anything that doesn't deal with reality (LOL) so if greek myths were true, I would honestly love that! Maybe they are? Haha! ;p

  15. I really enjoyed the first book in the series so I need to finish this up, especially since all the books are out. I'm soooo bad about finishing up series' because I totally lose steam and enthusiasm for the story if there's a lot of time between books. Great review, Brandi! :)

  17. I have this complete series but haven't read it yet. I am forever saying I want to get it started. Completing a series is hard for me! I don't like them to end.

Wouldn't it be wild if some of the Greek Myths were real, had even an ounce of truth to them? Like there really was a God of the Skies that threw Lightning Bolts when he got angry? And that our wars were caused b/c they, the Greek Gods, were bored and wanted to play with us. Pretty interesting idea.

  18. I remember reading Everneath and feeling frustrated because of the ending (I adored Jack so it broke my heart a little). I enjoyed it a lot nevertheless but I haven't read the sequel. I'm so glad to hear that this one is action-packed and that you liked it!

  19. Oh man, what if toddlers had abilities?

  20. That is such a downside isn't it? I understand publishers spacing and authors needing time to write and edit, but man...

I didn't read the first book because some reviews put me off it, as some usually do, which is a shame because I love Greek Mythology. So glad it kept your attention, and at least you can admire the MC. I do think there is truth to Greek Myths, same as any really, it has to come from somewhere, right? And something as complex and complicated when it comes to Greek Mythology, couldn't just come from nowhere, haha.

  26. I like the idea of beings that feed on emotion to cause a skewed view of things, and relatable characters totally make a book for me. I'll add it to my TBR.

  28. I wanted to read this series at one time, but it must of never officially made it to the TBR, because I haven't seen it or thought of it in awhile. Thank you for the helpful review and the reminder.
