Review: Forbidden by Suzuma

Forbidden Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma

Link goes to and teaser from Goodreads.com

" Sixteen-year-old Maya and seventeen-year-old Lochan have never had the chance to be 'normal' teenagers. Having pulled together for years to take care of their younger siblings while their wayward, drunken mother leaves them to fend alone, they have become much more than brother and sister. And now, they have fallen in love. But this is a love that can never be allowed, a love that will have devastating consequences ...

How can something so wrong feel so right?"

**My rating: 4 of 5 stars**

Reader discretion advised- some pretty graphic sexual scenes, and this book is about incest.

*My short but sweet review*

This is a really powerful story that makes you think about how you view things still considered taboo. Suzuma writes such a love story that I went from seriously? to wishing that things could just work out for them. Lochan and Willa are very mature for their age, and are raising their younger siblings, this shared responsibility has led them to fall in love. It was easy for me to forget (because the characters do I suppose) that they are siblings for a while, until they start talking through the issue- showing disgust, acceptance, anger that their love is viewed as wrong.

Spoilers below- highlight to read
I could not give it 5 stars, because the ending seriously depressed me and I wish that I just never would have read the epilogue. I just wanted their HEA- and although Lochan showed the ultimate sacrifice for his brothers and sisters, I just wish that they could have made things work despite all of their difficulties.

This is a must read though!

I would love to hear what you think and if you have written a review, please link- I would love to talk about this book!

  1. Wow, sounds a little like the book Flowers in the Attic which was from probably about 20 or more years ago. This is always a tough subject and at times very dark.

  3. I thought of Flowers In the Attic to when I first read this. I read a book called Eve, about Adam and Eve, where the children practiced incest, but they didn't really have any other options. But it was still a bit unsettling. I'll have to think about this one.

  4. This sounds like it could be quite a heavy read and the subject matter is not really something I would normally pick up. It's certainly a difficult subject to tackle and I may give a try after reading this review, as well as a bunch of others on Goodreads. It seems like many people really feel the book, which can really rare especially with the subject matter involved.

  6. This looks like a haunting story. My heart skipped a beat when I read the summary. I'm not sure I want to read it though, it sounds kinda... chilling.

  8. It really is chilling! I would recommend to give it a try, because I really did feel for and with the characters. The writing just grips you and makes you question is it always wrong?

I will have to check out Flowers in the attic once I digest this one.

  9. I've been absolutely dying to read this one. And it's not just because it's such a taboo topic, but because every review I've seen so far (yours included) has had nothing but great things to say about it!

  10. I'm intrigued by this book, mostly because I'm wondering how the author has managed to make a taboo subject so readable. I've heard nothing but good about it so I want to read it.

  11. I've heard a lot of positive things about this book...which considering it deals with incest is pretty amazing! It sounds like the author does a really good job of gaining the reader's sympathy for the characters and their situation.

  12. I will add this one to my list of to be read. It must be well written if both the characters and their situation is sympathetic. Great review.
