Interview with Karen Metcalf author of Into the Storm

About Karen, from her author site:

There’s a phrase in the South: “telling stories”, which means telling lies. Growing up, Karen Metcalf told a lot of stories, which wasn’t always a good thing.

She was raised on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where she spent most of her time reading science fiction and horror. She continues to explore those worlds through her writing, today.
Karen is 23 years old, and lives in Tucson, Arizona.

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.

A teenage girl’s anger makes her jump to a limbo between dimensions.

--How did you get the idea for the story?

Mitchell came first, when I had a thought about children being afraid of thunderstorms. That was the basis for the first chapter. However, I love thunderstorms, and decided Carly would, too. That is where the storm world came from. The rest just happened.

--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?

I would like to sit down with Morgan and ask him some questions of my own.  I would not want to meet Richard. Doing so would probably leave me with a criminal record for assault.

--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?

I try to read whenever I can, between work, school and now this tour. I am a big Stephen King fan; my favorite is The Long Walk. I also love Richard Matheson’s I am Legend, and have had my copy since I was in middle school. I’m exploring more sci-fi now, andJoe Haldeman’s The Forever War is absolutely in my top three.

--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
Right now I am just in the planning stage. I plan to have a break from work and school in a few months, and want to really settle down and really get something on paper then.

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?

I’ve always said I would like to go back to Jane Austen’s time. Though I am all for women’s rights, I am intrigued by the idea of socialization and reading as my only occupation. Being an author was a bit more glamorous back then, as well. I like Pride and Prejudice because of the relationships of the sisters. I would definitely want Mr. Darcy from the 2005 movie version, because I am in love with Matthew Macfadyen.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
I absolutely must have coffee. I also haven’t kicked my nicotine habit yet, but I am working on that one. I had the best couch in the world at the time, and I am now convinced I cannot write again until I find another. Apparently, reclining is a must.

As for music, I listened to whatever was on my computer at the time, which was mostly 90’s rock. I also think the Nine Inch Nailshelped with my more intense scenes. I have tremendous respect for Trent Reznor.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Probably something with the mind. Storm was my favorite X-Men, and I watched the cartoons a lot as a kid. I wished I could just summon storms. Telemetry would be pretty awesome.

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
I read, of course. I also paint a little, mostly watercolor, though I’m not that good. I enjoy most crafts, and have no athletic ability, whatsoever. And I mean none.
