Author Interview: Death Seraph by Ashley Bruce

Death Seraph by Ashley Bruce
After witnessing Death himself procure the spirits of her slain parents, seventeen-year-old Minky Rea must make a choice—one that bears on the final destination of her eternal soul.
Grief-stricken by her parents’ sudden passing, Minky discovers that not only has her traumatic experience triggered her innate ability to convene with the dead but it has also given her the power to enter their executioners’ dreams. Unfortunately, the threat of their mortal killers pales in comparison to the immortal danger Minky has unknowingly invited by acknowledging the presence of Death the night he collected the souls of her parents. When she is forced to juggle her menacing nightmares and the continuous pursuit of the ostentatiously hot angel of death named Nicolaus, she finds the only hope she has of maintaining her sanity is to rely on her aunt, Maggie Hayes for stability and comfort. Ultimately, Minky must choose between embracing her destiny of becoming a 'death delivery girl' with Nicolaus or relinquishing her fated path by ending her own life in order to protect her aunt.

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.
After witnessing Death procure her slain parents, 17-year-old Minky must make a choice—one that bears on the final destination of her soul.

--How did you get the idea for the story?
When I was off last summer from school with my two kiddos, I decided I wanted to write a YA paranormal romance novel to help occupy the time. Since almost all of my favorite paranormal romance novels involve vampires, I thought I would try to change it up a bit and find a new creature to love/hate. I figured, what’s more intimidating than Death himself?

--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
I would love to eat dinner with the Death Seraph, Nicolaus, for many different reasons. First of all, his immortality as an angel of death makes him beautiful in a dark, mysterious kind of way; second of all, he’s bold and often unapologetically takes what he wants; and thirdly, he’s the kind of guy who takes care of business (i.e. destroying demons, protecting the damsel in distress, and that sort of thing) without blinking an eye.

--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
With two little ones (an eight-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy), my time for reading is limited. When I do get a few minutes, I enjoy reading The Sookie Stackhouse Novels by Charlaine Harris and The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice.

--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
I have just started working on a sequel to Death Seraph. I expect it to be complete by the end of the summer.

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
My guilty pleasure would have to be Charlaine Harris’ Dead to the World. I would love to be Sookie Stackhouse for 24 hours in this book. Mmm … Eric the Viking. Enough said.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
Instead of coffee or music, solitude would be my drug of choice, but it’s not necessarily a requirement. Strangely enough, some of my best writing occurs when things in my life are completely chaotic.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I would love to have the ability to be invisible whenever I choose. It would just be nice to be able to fall off the face of the world every once in a while. It’s very humbling to gain a perspective on the world you never even knew existed.

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
Besides reading and writing, I love playing with my children, watching movies, and crocheting in my free time.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?
I want to thank the readers and I especially want to thank Brandi for this amazing opportunity!
