I was immediately drawn to the premise because I like reading about illnesses and I like the idea of psychic visions, and this combines them into one book.
Parallel Visions is a short and enjoyable read. I liked the character of Kate and how she really cared about her sister. Gil, the love interest is a genuine guy and I can see why Kate is attracted to him, she has had a crush on him for a while, and it is not just instant magnetism because of looks or anything like that. She has seen that he is kind and helpful to others, even the ones who are sick or hurt, and that especially gets Kate's attention since she has severe asthma.
The fantasy element is well done, and it really is a unique idea. It gets to me though how Kate has to suffer to have these visions, but she wants to because she desires to help others, especially her sister who may be in trouble.
I like how Parallel Visions really focuses on the family. Not only Kate and her family as a close knit unit but also Gil and his sister who is in a lot of pain, and he and his Nana come together to support her.
That is not to say I didn't have a few issues... There were times when Kate and Gil didn't sound like teenagers, they sounded like middle aged people having a conversation. It wasn't all of the time though and it didn't pull me out of the story, it is just something I noticed.
The story wrapped up well, and I can't wait to read more about Kate and Gil in the next book.
Bottom Line: Great premise and quick read.

ReplyDeleteI don't really know that this book is for me, but I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I really like the idea of tight-knit family units, though. It's something that we never really see anymore. It's nice.

I believe in those feelings that you get before something bad happens, but I don't know that I believe that people can see the future accurately. I think that the future changes all the time. That it's not constant. On another note, what do you believe? (:

DeleteSounds like a nice romance, based on personality and nature, rather than amazing looks. Not sure how I feel about them sounding like a middle aged couple lol, but you say it doesn't take from the story :) Even though this has the fantasy element to it, it sounds quite like a contemporary read. Glad to learn that this is an enjoyable read. I guess we could all sense snippets of the future in some way but we may not be paying particular attention to the glimpses when we sense them.

ReplyDeleteI have been dying to read this one since i read the summary. I think it's funny when these "teenagers" sound older. As an older writer, it must be hard to sound like a teenager.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading about people that have visions...although the last one on that score for me was a bust. It sounds like the romantic interest is great, and it's so hard not to feel sympathetic towards a character that has to suffer while really wanting to help others. I get the problem with sounding older though...I have run into that and sounding younger than I imagined as well. Great review! Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven
