Review: Survive by Alex Morel

Survive
Survive by Alex Morel
Hatchet meets Lost in this modern-day adventure tale of one girl's reawakening
Jane is on a plane on her way home to Montclair, New Jersey, from a mental hospital. She is about to kill herself. Just before she can swallow a lethal dose of pills, the plane hits turbulence and everything goes black. Jane wakes up amidst piles of wreckage and charred bodies on a snowy mountaintop. There is only one other survivor: a boy named Paul, who inspires Jane to want to fight for her life for the first time.
Jane and Paul scale icy slopes and huddle together for warmth at night, forging an intense emotional bond. But the wilderness is a vast and lethal force, and only one of them will survive.

Blkosiner's Book Blog review
Jane got my attention right away because I have had mental health problems as well, and I am fascinated with reading this type book. I was intrigued at how someone could go from wanting to kill themselves to fighting tooth and nail to survive after a plane crash. I don't know how much has to do with control of when and how, or actually just having that near death experience that kicked her survival instinct in gear.
Her relationship and interactions with Paul are all meaningful and escalated because of the situation that they find themselves in. There is no time to be coy, hide things, or to really sort out emotions. They are faced with so many things that could end their life or the others' that they are feeling everything on multiply and then to the extreme.
Jane herself is witty and intense. It was definitely a unique experience being inside her head. I first didn't want to like her, but I ended up as she grew and learned to appreciate life.

Bottom Line: Survive is an action packed, emotional no holds barred kind of book that I did not look away from.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Do you think you could survive after a plane crash on a mountain?

  1. Oh no, I don't think I can survive outside in a freezing weather. I will try my hardest but I know it'll be a fight to the death.

I would love to read the book to know what happens to these two teens. :)

  2. I'm always intrigued by the portrayal of mental health issues in books. It's basically a mine field for authors and I like to see how they handled it. I love that Survive is such an intense read.
    Great review!

    1. It handles it well, but most of the book is about her surviving.

  5. What an interesting twist of Jane first wanting to commit suicide and then fighting for her life. It sounds very complex and emotional, but also an interesting read.

  6. This sounds good, because I absolutely adore problem books, LOL! And I also adore intense characters, so this might be a good book for me. Fab review, Brandi! (:

Um, I'm not sure that I could survive a plane crash on a mountain or not. I think that I would have to know more about the situation. (:

  9. Ooh, I'm so glad to hear you loved this one. I just received my review copy of this today and I'm really looking forward to it. Jane sounds like an intriguing character - I'm certainly looking forward to seeing how she transforms from wanting to kill herself to fighting to survive. Great review!

  13. I do want to read this! I doubt I could survive on my own!

  14. Well those last 17lbs of baby weigh would probably help, but I'm not sure I'd survive otherwise. I'm not one for the outdoors and I hate camping!
Glad you enjoyed this one although the characters sudden change of heart does sound a little odd!

  15. I remember this one. Oh another good review of this book. No way this isn't an emotional adventurous ride! I am curious about this one and sometimes I do like to be on the edge of my seat. Pushing it up the wishlist!

Would I survive? Hm... depends... if the person I crashed with is a survivalist. ;D

  18. Seems like Jane really got her survival instinct kick-started after the plane crash. I'd assume I could be in massive shock after a plane crash on a mountain and I guess the most I could do is trying to scream (with no sound coming out). So I bet you could help to deduce that the rate of survival for this human is... >.<

  19. I would like to think I could survive, but I'm not sure.

When a book is compared to LOST, I'm instantly intrigued. I really like that the story deals w/a mental health issue, so that we can all learn more about them. I'm really glad you liked this. Great review, Brandi !

  20. Have you read This is Not a test by Courtney Summers? This book reminds me of that - except with zombies lol

I've read so many good reviews for Survive so far.

  21. This book sounds like a crazy ride! I have watched some survival shows along this vein (well the surviving from a plane crash part) and I'm not sure I could. It might be easier to just off yourself right away rather than TRY to survive. I'm such a weakling.

  22. This sounds very interesting and I definitely like the premise for it. The characters sound great too, and I am curious to see how Jane gets through it all! I'm glad you enjoyed this! :D Fabulous review!

And well....I honestly don't think I would have the will power or the strength to survive on a mountain after crashing. And I don't think it would help me because I'm deathly afraid of heights! lol ;p

  23. I hate the snow and would definitely not survive! I didn't even know that eating snow would cause hypothermia and death. Never thought of it before. I would have been scarfing down snow cause I'm always thirsty. It was emotional. I loved Paul and he really helped her so I was sad with how things went.

  24. Sounds like a gripping book. I bet it is pretty action/adrenaline packed. I sure hope that I would survive...I know I would be praying the whole way down. Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven

  30. Gosh I don't want to survive that kind of trauma. I'd rather be one of the casualties. My survival skills are nil!

  31. If I went down in a crash, I have no idea what I would do. Great review!
