Review: Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2)

it's almost
time for war.
Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.
She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.
Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.
In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life.

When the synopsis says that she has to make some hard choices, it is not exaggerating  I thought it was just being fancy, but she is faced with a twist that I didn't see coming. And it makes her have to make choices about love that can kill, or breaking her own heart... and his?
I love the first book, and the second doesn't disappoint. We get to see more about Omega Point, and we get more of Kenji, who quickly became one of my favorite secondary characters. In Unravel Me, we see more of the day to day operations and Castle's research. The action is well written and the character development is superb. Juliette learns so much about herself and about stepping up, but she of course is still not perfect. She makes some mistakes that hurt to read about, and she literally couldn't make some of her decisions without hurting someone.
Besides the above mentioned twist, there are others that left me reeling. I finally began to see the appeal of Warner to an extent (this part of the review was written before I read Destroy Me) but I still go a little crazy for Adam  He makes me happy just how much he adores her and how loyal he is to his family and what he believes in. Speaking of his family--James has grown up a little in this one and he is one of my fave characters besides the obvious choices.
Although I still think that Adam is the best for Juliette, I know that between what I have learned in this and Destroy Me, that I don't want Warner to get hurt. I don't know how that is going to happen, but I know I don't want it. Where Shatter Me was Adam's book, and it made me love him, and it seems like the main character always picks the first love, Unravel Me is Warner's book. We get to see more of that deep, emotional and scarred side of him. And we see more connection with Warner, because Juliette is afraid of hurting Adam. My mind doesn't even know what to think, and that is good writing when I can't make up my mind.
As usual, the pacing is great. There is always some sort of action going on, whether battles or character development. Or some scenes that will break your heart, or make you sigh because of the romance. The sequel is hot and I absolutely can't wait for the third.

Bottom Line: Awesome sequel, enjoyed Juliette even more in this one!

Question: Have you ever made a decision that leaves someone hurt no matter what you decide?

  1. I feel like you, and aside from cutting her in half one our boys is going to end up hurt.

  2. I don't think I've ever had to make a decision where someone would end up getting hurt either way but that is something I kind of like seeing in books because it means that the author is putting the characters through the wringer and not letting them take the easy way out.

  4. Everyone seems to love Unravel Me! I loved Shatter Me, but have been so hesitant to continue. I'm positive b/c I think Juliette and Warner are going to end up together, & I do not want that.
So glad you enjoyed this one. Great review!

  5. I'm glad there's more of Kenji. I really liked him. I am much more of a Warner fan than an Adam fan, even though Warner was pretty evil in the first book. Maybe Adam will grow on me.

  6. I've been meaning to read this book for a while now. I'm a little scared to read it though because I don't want to like Warner lol. Love triangles frustrate me so much! Great review!

  9. I'm skipping some parts of your review because I still haven't read it. So in the end, are you still team Adam? I know poor Warner but she has to choose one. Doesn't she?

  10. We are review twins today!! I'm so happy that you loved this one, too. Isn't Kenji just amazing? I love both Adam and Warner, but Warner just stole my heart in Destroy Me and in this sequel. Terrific review, Brandi! As for your question, I missed out on going to a prom because two guys asked me. They were friends, and I didn't want them to lose their friendship over little ol' me. So I try very hard to not hurt anyone... even at my own expense. True story. lol <3

  13. I definitely enjoyed this one, although I can't say I'm feeling the Warner love like everyone else. I sympathize with his character completely, but I feel like his 'love' for Juliette is SO UNHEALTHY, and I don't get why Juliette suddenly adored him, while still hating him at the same time. Nevertheless I do enjoy this series, and I'm pretty sure Kenji is one of my fave characters ever. =)

  15. I still haven't quite gotten involved into the first book, but I haven't listened to much of it. I really need to get going on it. This sounds so good I can't wait to get to it. Curious to see how I feel about the boys. :)

  16. Loved this review!! Though I can see Adam being good for Juliette, I can also see Warner, at times, being good for her, too. I think this one is my favorite of the series, and I am enjoying Juliette more and more, she is growing as a character.

All in all, Kenji is my favorite character XD

    Great review!!

  20. So glad you enjoyed this! I have no idea how Mafi is going to solve this without hurting either Adam or Warner, and I really don't want either of them to be hurt. They both love Juliette so much, and I love them each for different reasons. I have a feeling I'm going to be sad no matter what happens. Yay for Kenji and James love! Great review :-)

  35. So glad there's someone else who likes Adam the most still! I definitely understand Warner more now after Destroy Me and Unravel Me, but I still love Adam and Juliette together the most.
I almost feel like Warner's true redemption will come by him sacrificing himself in the final book? It would be so sad, but fitting in a way for his character.

  37. I love your review! Yes, in Unravel me Juliette is growing up little by little in to a strong woman. However, I found Adam a little bit annoying *sorry* and *sorry again* I love Warner more than him because I think that Warner is more interesting than Adam but anyway, I love the two guys so *yey*!

    :DD

  38. I hate it when you can't decide who you prefer, it feels like it's you who makes the decision- and not the actual heroine haha
I haven't read any books in this series yet, but they're on my TBR list :D

  39. Isn't it creepy how everyone has some sort of appeal to Warner? Makes you wonder about yourself a little...thanks for the review!

  40. I totally get what you feel being torn between Adam and Warner althoigh I am a real huge Team Warner fan it's just too painful to see someone get hurt. Great sequel I must say. It took me longer to read this than my usual pace so I could really savour every scenes.Did I mention I like Kenji too? Haha

Meeting Tahereh Mafi in person just added another exciting thing for reading this book. ;)
