David's Song

Taken from the book cover: Annie only ever really loved two men in her life. One broke her heart, the other married her. Four children and fifteen years later, Annie’s marriage is in jeopardy. Money is tight and her husband questions the very foundation of their relationship. When Annie is unexpectedly given the opportunity to see the young man who broke her heart — a man who is now a megastar in the music industry — Annie is faced with choices. Choices that will determine what is of more value — a second chance at lost love and unfulfilled dreams or commitment, trust, and love built on years of experience.

A psychologically subtle, yet compelling tale about how the instinct and need for love overcomes self-doubt and personal inadequacy.

Twitter version:  Annie loves David and Jeremy. David dumps her. Jeremy marries her. Years later, Annie gets to choose between them again.  It’s a tough choice.

How did you get the idea for the story?
When I was in college I had a big crush on a boy.  That relationship never developed into anything more than friendship, but I never forgot him.  Nearly 25 years later, I ran into him again.  I met his wife and his oldest son and had a few minutes to chat with him.  He still remembered me as well, which was incredibly flattering.  After that meeting, I started wondering how my life would have been different if something had developed in those early days.  In the end, I decided that I loved the life I had and am glad for the way life worked out.  But through all that wondering, David’s Song was born.

Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
Least?  Definitely Emily—she’s a busybody.
Most?  I think David—because it would be one really good meal!

Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
David’s Song is the first book of a trilogy.  There is a teaser for the second book, Jeremy’s Promise, at the end of David’s Song.  I am hoping to release the second book later this fall. The third book in the trilogy is completed and under revision.  I also have another stand alone novel that I am currently revising and two others that I’ve just scratched the surface on.

What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
Some of my favorite books are Sylvia’s Lover, by Elizabeth Gaskell, Firefly Lane, by Kristin Hannah, Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafron, and Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, of course.

I still find time to read.  If I’m not writing, I’m reading.  For many years, when my children were young, I didn’t have much time for reading.  I’m making up for it now.

If a fairy godmother told you you could be put into the world of your favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
I remember when I read Shannon Hale’s Austenland thinking that it would be great fun to vacation there.  So I would have to say that I would be put in the world of Pride and Prejudice.   It would be nice to live for a while in a time when gender roles were so clearly defined—where civility was paramount. I also loved the clothing styles of the period.  The men looked so dashing in their long coats and the women’s dresses, with their empire waists, would be quite flattering on me. And what woman doesn’t want to meet Mr. Darcy?!

Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, ect)?
I would say the only things I need to write are background music and privacy. Silence distracts me, so I need something going in the background to help me stay focused.  And when I’m writing, I tend to talk to myself—just under my breath.  It’s embarrassing to get caught.  But I find talking through dialogue, in particular, helps me say things ‘just right.’

What is one thing you would tell your 15 year old self?
I love this question!  I would tell my younger self to quit worrying and enjoy the moment.  All the things that I was dreaming about at that time would come about in due time.  Worrying wouldn’t hurry it along, or make it any more enjoyable when it did.

Lightening Round: this or that?
Vanilla or chocolate?  Chocolate

Salty or sweet?  Sweet
Beach or Mountains?  Both?!
Phone call or email? Phone call
Early bird or night owl?  Night owl
Dog or cat? Cat
Messy or neat?  In between
Ninjas or pirates? Pirates

  1. Wow, it's amazing that the idea came from a personal experience. It's good that she doesn't regret anything.

  2. I like the name of this book. For some reason it sounds sad. I have recently reconnected with a friend male from school we chat on email, all very platonic, but it is interesting to chat about hubs/wife kids and where we are at in life:)
