Review: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

The Fault in Our Stars
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.
Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.
Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.

Who knew that depressing and funny could be woven together so seamlessly and beautifully? Well, I didn't quite realize it until I started reading this awesome book by John Green. Hazel has this dry humor that I love, and Augustus is witty and blunt--it really does make for a sweet combo.
I really flew through this one and loved most everything about it. I enjoyed how sweet relationship between Hazel and Gus, plus their friendship with Isaac. The conversations were so realistic, and made me laugh. Both Hazel and Gus' parents were every kind of amazing and involved. I loved the side quest with the author Houten. He was hateful and disappointing but inspiring somehow all at the same time. The characters are amazingly flawed and maybe that is what made me love it.
It was very down at times but that made it all the more realistic... It is about kids dying and fighting cancer, and cancer sucks. And let's face it, life sucks sometimes too. And Green embraces that through his writing.
I really don't have a lot to add except that it is powerful and I recommend it. There are so many glowing reviews, well deserved.
Bottom Line: Deliciously heart wrenching and hilarious.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Do you think you could fall in love with someone who has cancer?

  6. So excited for this! I have TFiOS sitting on my shelf right now, and it's taking all my self-control NOT to read it, because I've heard so much about Augustus and Hazel, and everyone seems to have loved it so much. Glad you enjoyed this, too! I really do need to shove my ARCs aside and pick up a book I know will be good. :)

  15. I really enjoyed realistically flawed characters as well. It does sound depressing and it should giving the content, but I'm glad there's a little humor mixed in. Are you looking to see the movie when it's out? Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

  20. I know a lot of people who love this series, but I just have stayed away from it. Yes, I know one day I'll read it, but I'm just a chicken because I know I'll be crying so hard with this book. I hate to cry. LOL

  21. I'm glad you loved this; it's a favorite of mine. John Green is great at mixing sad and funny and it's amazing. I don't mind sad, realistic novels...but I do love some humor sometimes too.

  22. I couldn't stand this book! The dialogue was too... worked for teenagers. I was really into the story at the beginning but then I just lost interest. However, the scene of Gus in the car almost made me cry.

  23. I just haven't read this because I think it'd tear me apart and I don't know if I could handle it! That being said, it does sound like a great book. Maybe one day I'll dare to pick it up...

  25. This book was the best book that I had read in 2012 and I haven't read anything in 2013 that has surpassed it. It moved me in a way that I can't even describe. I am glad that you liked this one and that it also moved you as well. The humour in this book is what makes it what it is.

    Great review Brandi!

  26. I'll admit that I don't read many contemporaries anymore but I've been wanting to get into the genre again. Reading your review for this book convinced me that if I ever get out of my contemporary slump, this will be one of the first ones I pick up. The characters sound so memorable and honestly I love a writer who can embrace the ups AND downs of life in a way John Green seems to be able to. Lovely review :)

  32. Green has a wonderful way of capturing the mindset of certain types of teenagers that feels timeless. The Fault In Our Stars is worth the read. Just bring a tissue.
