Review: Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Allegiant (Divergent, #3)
Allegiant by Veronica Roth
One choice will define you.
What if your whole world was a lie?
What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything?
What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected?
The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.
But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.
Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.

It is really hard for me to write reviews for series enders, because it is sad to leave characters that I have grown to love and invested so much time into. So, this will be short, spoiler free.
I was drawn right back into the world of Tobias and Tris in this bittersweet conclusion to the series. Though I did rush through the middle because it slowed down got too weighty in the middle, it picked right back up.
There were lots of surprises, and things I both expected, dreaded and couldn't wait for.
I loved getting into Four's head and getting his perspective. It was an added bonus in this and gave us some valuable insight.
Tris is as strong as ever, even though she has her flaws, that makes her even more relatable, and easy to like and pull for. She has the recklessness, but also the courage and sacrifice that defines her. Her journey to really understanding what sacrifice is was really cyclic and I enjoyed reading about it. She really began to understand it was about love, and all of the things her parents tried to teach her.
Tobias has a journey of healing, of forgiveness, of reconciliation and of acceptance of himself of who he is. Not what society makes him out to be or in black and white.
There is a lot of action in this one, tying up loose ends and resolving all of the plots.
OMG. The ending. I am one of the people who are torn. I hate it and saw it coming, but at the same time I love it and think it is fitting. It depends on what moment you ask me.

Bottom Line: Fitting but shocking ending that i hate and love at same time and bittersweet trilogy conclusion.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Do you ever regret or put off reading last books in series?

  1. I think most series endings are just destined to be bittersweet, and in this case it seems like it was more of a bitter experience for people. Glad you understand the ending and think it is fitting (even if you're not thrilled about it). Thanks for your honest review!

  2. I only skimmed though your review cause I'll be reading book sometimes soon (hopefully) and I haven't even read the blurb. But from the rating I gathered that you enjoyed it and I'm so happy to hear that! :)

  3. Yes, I'm often nervous to read last books. I was not a fan of this one, and not even because of the ending, but because I thought the series lost all the magic of the first book. But I thought Champion was a great trilogy-ender and I have high hopes for Into the Still Blue :)

  7. I loved the ending too. I also saw it coming and felt it worked really well. Bittersweet of course though.

  8. The ending still makes me sad just thinking about it! I'm going to have such a hard time watching the movies now that I know how they end :( I also thought the middle's pace slowed down too much and got a bit boring. I would've changed some things but would still reread it when that movie comes around.

  15. I never regret or put off reading the last book in a series. I'm a freak and read it RIGHT when it comes out! I can't even wait to go to the book store, I buy it on my kindle and then go to the store and buy a copy later on, haha. I am totally torn by the ending as well, but loved the book. I wish Four didn't seem so weak in this book and also the only way I'm happy with the ending is if Four had done what Christina stopped him from doing. Then it would have been a depressing bittersweet ending.

  16. I thought the ending would have been better if it was set up more completely. I didn't hate it, but I'm not sure it made sense, either. Thanks for your thoughts!

  17. Shiz! This is one of the few dystopian series that I really loved! I have to schedule this otherwise I won't get to it til next year maybe. That ending, everybody's talking about that! I need to know! Thanks for the great tease!

  18. I am not reading reviews for this! And when I go out with my friends I warn them- no talking about Allegiant! I know I need to read it so I can stop saying that. All I know so far is that people have been angry about the end, but I don't know why. Your 3.5 stars aren't so bad...

  19. Yup, I'm split on the ending too! On the one hand, I thought Veronica Roth was brave for going in that direction and on the other hand, I really don't think it had to happen that way.

  20. I get so conflicted when people say a book has a bittersweet ending haha. I don't know what I will feel! This series is one I still need to read so thanks for keeping it spoiler free!

  21. I always get stressed when I am reading the last book in a series. I am so glad to hear that this one was a winner! This was a great review and you made me want to start this series since I know it is good through and through. :)

  22. I'm really wanting to start this series. I don't know what's kept me so long from jumping in, but I think it's definitely going to be some of the next few reads that I have up. I am a little scared about how you described the ending to the series, but I think I'll have to see what it's all about. Great review! Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

  24. I want to read this one, but I am having trouble reading Mockingjay as I heard so much about the upset of that series ender. I must! Glad you enjoyed this one. I have top admit I will read it sooner than later :D

  25. I have read the whole series, and like you, I am also torn! I would like to say I do admire her for being able to do what she did as an author. I write myself and I always find it difficult to kill off a main character, even when it is befitting...

Yay! This is already added to my to-read list, it sounds like good book!
