Review: The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler

The Future of Us
The Future of Us by Jay Asher

It's 1996, and Josh and Emma have been neighbors their whole lives. They've been best friends almost as long - at least, up until last November, when Josh did something that changed everything. Things have been weird between them ever since, but when Josh's family gets a free AOL CD in the mail, his mom makes him bring it over so that Emma can install it on her new computer. When they sign on, they're automatically logged onto their Facebook pages. But Facebook hasn't been invented yet. And they're looking at themselves fifteen years in the future.
By refreshing their pages, they learn that making different decisions now will affect the outcome of their lives later. And as they grapple with the ups and downs of what their futures hold, they're forced to confront what they're doing right - and wrong - in the present

I love the premise of The Future of Us, and I am actually kinda sad that it has taken me this long to pick it up. I immediately connected with Emma and was pulling for Josh, the other main character, and the boy next door. They used to be close, but things have changed for them in the last 6 months, but Emma's discovery of her... and Josh's future facebook pages draws them back together.
It was a really cute story and the romance was a slow build and a little frustrating at times, but the ending came together and it was solid.
I loved seeing how even the smallest detail can have huge waves, and it was hard for them to learn the lessons the hard way. Sometimes it is better not to know. If each moment can change things in such a big way, then you can't make decisions on that little bit of information.
The nostalgia factor is really nice, but sometimes overplayed.
I enjoyed the friendship basis between Emma and Josh, and the subtleties of them trying to figure out if it could work and what their feelings for themselves, others and each other are.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Do you have a decision in the past you wish you could change?

  1. I think we all have decisions we'd love to change - for me it's that I wish I was still in touch with my pre-university friends!

Glad you enjoyed this book and that insta-love wasn't a factor!

  4. Ohhh I've had this on my Kindle for a while. I read his last book, I think it's Thirteen Reasons Why. I liked it a lot but didn't love it so I was hesitant. Great review, I'll have to check it out now!

Glad you enjoy this so much. :)

  10. This sounds like a really good story, and I love the premise of them being able to catch glimpses of the future through Facebook :)

I don't think I have any regrets or things I'd like to change in the past, because then, a lot of other things would have changed as well, right? And I'm quite happy with where I am now, so it's all good.

Thanks for the review, and the new add to my TBR :) Have a great evening.

  13. Sometimes I ponder on the possibilities of doing/ not doing certain things in my life but I never feel like I want to change a particular decision that I've made. This story sounds really great - thanks for sharing.

  14. I was so so about this book. I thought the nostalgia was the best part because I wasn't fond of the plot. Mostly I couldn't stand Emma. Also, I wonder whether current teens would like this book. It seemed like something that would appeal to people who were teens in the late 90s as we both were.
