The Sound by Sarah Alderson
When aspiring music journalist Ren Kingston takes a job nannying for a wealthy family on the exclusive island of Nantucket, playground for Boston’s elite, she’s hoping for a low-key summer reading books and blogging about bands. Boys are firmly off the agenda.
What she doesn’t count on is falling in with a bunch of party-loving private school kids who are hiding some dark secrets, falling (possibly) in love with the local bad boy, and falling out with a dangerous serial killer…
The gripping new stand-alone novel from the author of Hunting Lila.

Interview (feel free to do any or all of the questions, including or excluding the lightning round)
--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.
Gossip Girl crossed with The Killing, set in Nantucket. Watch the awesome TRAILER HERE!

--How did you get the idea for the story?
I nannied in Nantucket when I was 17 and had a great time hanging out with a group of private school kids who were holidaying there and with the locals. It was a wild, fun, magical time and when I was thinking up ideas for a new book I realized Nantucket was the perfect setting for a young adult thriller. I made the main character a British girl called Ren who like me when I was 17 had never nannied before. She’s a music blogger and loves books.
I drew on all my own experiences from not being able to drive on the right hand side of the road to cycling all over the island and having to change a diaper for the first time though I added the serial killer.
You can watch me talking a little more about the inspiration and reading from the the book here.
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
I’d love to have dinner with Jesse, the local boy who works at the bike and tackle store who Ren falls for. We’d talk music and books and I’d get him to teach me how to play guitar.
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
While The Sound is my first US release I have already published five books in the UK with Simon & Schuster, including Hunting Lila and Losing Lila. My latest YA thriller Out of Control just came out in the UK too – it’s set in New York and about human trafficking and so far it’s getting awesome reviews (phew). It will be out in the US next year!
On top of that Pan Macmillan are publishing my first new adult novel in June – it’s called Come Back To Me and I’m publishing it under the name Mila Gray. Simon & Schuster will be publishing it in the US at the end of next year.
--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
I love reading. I always have about six books on the go at once. At the moment I’m reading The Good Lord Bird by James McBride. I’m also reading Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews and a brilliant new adult novel that’s just come out called Before He Was Famous by Becky Wicks.
My favorite books include The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series & anything by Simone Elkeles and Morgan Matson!

--If a fairy godmother told you could be put into the world of your favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
Wow. I think I’d love to go to early 20th century Florence as I used to live there and A Room with a View is one of my favorite books.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
All of the above! I can’t function without coffee and I always write with music playing! Also cake. I can’t live without cake.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I think I would be like Lila from my Hunting Lila series and be able to move things just by looking at them.

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
Read! My 7 year old daughter and I will happily spend all day curled up together reading.
--What is one thing you would tell your 15 year old self?
Don’t worry, everything will be OK. And when you’re 18 don’t do that thing with that boy that puts your back out and will cost you thousands of dollars in osteopath bills for the REST OF YOUR LIFE.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?
Take care of your backs.
And read my books. They’re really fun. J
