Review: Stone Cold Touch by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Stone Cold Touch (The Dark Elements #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Every touch has its price
Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.
But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…

I wanted to read Stone Cold Touch because I adore Jennifer as a person and an author. I love her snarky sense of humor, the ability to draw me into her worlds, connect with the main characters, fall in love with her swoony guys, and always want more. I read Bitter Sweet Love and White Hot Kiss, and love her take on gargoyles, as well as really connecting and feeling for the spot that Layla the main character in this one is in where she lives with Wardens, the full gargoyles, yet the mysterious, and hot Roth, who is an upper level demon, but yet he is so attentive and protective of her and even sacrificed himself for her. Then there is Zayne, who she has always been close to and had a crush on, and trying to navigate those waters all while being a hybrid-- half warden and half demon. She can tag demons for the wardens to kill, but she can also take someone's soul, a demon property.

This started right where the last left off, and there was enough review without weighing anything down, but enough to get me right back in there, totally with the story and not confused since its been a bit since I read the first. Layla has a whole new set of problems when her abilities change as well as everyone realizing that a nightmare creature may have been created and they will form an unlikely and shaky truce to put an end to it.

My feelings for both of the boys, and appreciating the hard place that Layla is in, trying to figure out who she is, and where she fits in as well as which boy is the right choice for her. This once again has some hot scenes, and even though we have Roth--I think he's playing an Edward because of the things he said to Layla, but in some ways I can understand. (Don't consider this is a spoiler, happens early). So, thanks to his idiocy we get to have a book where Zayne can throw his hat in the ring for Layla's heart, and by golly, it confuses me even more.

There is so much action in this one and things revealed in this one, it kept my attention and I can't wait for the next one. I love her writing and she holds one of my favorite author spots, and with her hot romance and snarky humor as well as break neck pace and surprising reveals.

Bottom Line: Great second book and can't wait for more.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Do you have a preference of who Layla should be with?

  5. I've had a bit of a love/hate relationship with her books. I tend to feel extremes in both direction. Which can be frustrating. I haven't tried this series yet, but I think I'll have to at some point.

  6. I have heard quite a bit about these books, but I am still not sure whether or not I want to pick them up and begin them. It was an awesome review though, and made me seriously consider trying these!

  9. So happy to see that you liked this one! I haven't started reading the series, so I don't know if I'd root for one guy over another but Roth does sound hot and amazing. Thanks for sharing! :)

  10. YES! I loved this one as well Brandi! JLA somehow can make me not mind that there is in fact two possible love interest. Both guys pull at my heartstrings and now I'm invested in them as well as Layla! The story was auctioned packed and did not suffer the second book syndrome at all, in fact I may have liked it even better!
