Review: In Her Wake by K.A. Tucker

In Her Wake (Ten Tiny Breaths 0.5) by K.A. Tucker
Before you knew him as Trent in Ten Tiny Breaths, he was Cole Reynolds—and he had it all. Until one night when he makes a fatal, wrong decision…and loses everything.
When a drunken night out at a Michigan State college party results in the death of six people, Cole must come to terms with his part in the tragedy. Normally, he’d be able to lean on his best friends—the ones who have been in his life since he could barely walk. Only, they’re gone. Worse, there’s the shattered body of a sixteen-year-old girl lying somewhere in a hospital bed, her entire life ripped from her because of a case of beer and a set of keys.
Everyone assures him that they know it wasn’t intentional, and yet he can’t ignore the weight of their gazes, the whispers behind his back. Nor can he shake the all-consuming guilt he feels every time he thinks of that girl who won’t so much as allow him near her hospital room to apologize. As the months go by and the shame and loneliness festers, Cole begins to lose his grip on what once was important—college, his girlfriend, his future. His life. It’s not until Cole hits rock-bottom that he can begin to see another way out of his personal hell: forgiveness.
And there’s only one person who can give that to him…

It was nice to get the full story and emotions from Trent aka Cole. I knew the end game and how it ended up for him and Kasey but its been a while since I read Ten Tiny Breaths so it wasn't too much. I will have to say though that in my head I had him mixed up with Quinton from Breaking Nova (also a car crash but different circumstances and people who passed--therefore different sorts of burdens.) but I quickly got my steamy boys straightened out.

This one is very emotional but it does jump straight into it, and I wish that it would have started with getting to know Sasha more. I know that we get flashbacks but I feel like the grief would be even more personalized if I would have gotten to know him before the tragedy strikes.

I think that it was realistic in the aspect of the grieving process and it helped me to understand where Trent/Cole was feeling and his motivations. It made me want to read Ten Tiny Breaths again to learn Kasey all over.

Bottom Line: Worthwhile, emotional novella.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Have you ever felt guilty for someone else's injury or bad decisions?

  1. I get some characters that are quite similar mixed up too sometimes, haha, so you're not alone! I'd feel guilty for somebody else's injury, but I wouldn't feel bad for somebody's bad decision, as it is their decision, you don't make someone do anything.

  2. Wow, this sounds insanely emotional. I didn't really like Ten Tiny Breaths all that much myself (I know, I'm the black sheep!), but Trent's story sounds riveting

  5. I really like the cover to this one - it caught my eye immediately and is just gorgeous. I haven't read Ten Tiny Breaths myself but this looks like a very emotional spin off novella and one that matches well with the story. I have felt to blame for someone else's injuries when I got into a bike crash with someone and my friend ended up injured but I didn't :/ She is okay now, though.

  15. I really have loved and read this whole series, but this one hasn't really interested me, I think because I already know what happened and this sounds way too emotional. Glad it was a good read for you :)
