Harper is used to her family being hounded by protesters. Her father runs the company that trademarked the "Memtex" procedure to wipe away sad memories, and plenty of people think it shouldn't be legal. Soon afterward, she’s plagued with strange symptoms, including hallucinations of a woman who is somehow both a stranger, yet incredibly familiar. Harper begins to wonder if she is delusional, or if these are somehow memories.
Together with Neil, who insists he has his own reasons for needing answers about the real dangers of Memtex, Harper begins her search for the truth. What she finds could uproot all she’s ever believed about her life…

Remember appealed to me since I am drawn to stories about memory loss, and the idea of selecting memories to be less emotional or even the chance to remove them has so many possibilities. At the beginning Harper seems to have things going pretty well, she's smart, especially in sciences, she has a long term boyfriend and a loyal if opposite best friend.
However it was a waiting game, because I know from the synopsis that things will go wrong and she will have memories that she'd rather not have, and pays a price for them to not plague her.
Her procedure prompted frightening side effects and she meets Neil, who seems to have answers to the questions she has, where no one in her life is offering up suggestion.
I liked the friendship in this one. How she was so supportive for Harper and gave an ear. But I think it brings up an important issue where when Harper has a problem she gets so focused on herself and issues that she didn't give her time to talk about her own issues.
It got pretty suspenseful, and I have to admit that I didn't see a lot of the twists coming. I had ideas, but none of them were right.
The love triangle aspect wasn't too annoying, and I can understand how she ended up with the sticky situation.
Everything wrapped up well, and I enjoyed this standalone mystery.

ReplyDeleteI love memory loss ones, but this really wasn't for me, I think I only read up to like 15-20% and DNF'D, just didn't like how the MC was with her boyfriend and friend, annoyed me, haha. But glad you enjoyed it. :)

I'm a fan of memory loss story lines just so long as they aren't used as a gimmick to cause drama. The twists seem like they were well executed, and the love triangle tolerable. I don't have anything floating around inside my head that I'd like to delete. Time has a way of dulling even the worst ones.

ReplyDeleteGlad that the love triangle wasn't that annoying. I usually can't get into books if they have a love triangle, and I have only read a few that actually make me enjoy a love triangle! The idea of this book is interesting, selecting memories to be forgotten. I might have to read this one!

ReplyDeleteI am actually surprised that this one has a love triangle in it because I don't really think it would be necessary in this story. But at least it wasn't too annoying! The idea of this one sounds good - wiping memories - and makes me think of The Body Electric. I know I liked that one, so I will probably like this! A few years back I had a dark and rough time in my life, and even though it was good for me in a way, I wouldn't mind softening that memory.

I'm fascinated by memory story lines as well. Very glad to hear that this one has a unique twist and that you didn't see things coming. That's always a plus. There are definitely memories that I would choose to erase, but at the same time, it's why I am who I am, so would I change if they were gone? Not something that I really want to experience.
ReplyDeleteI am always wary of memory loss stories. I don't know if there are any I would really want to get rid of maybe a few embarrassing ones but only if I could erase it from the memory of the person that experienced it with me too lol.

Oh I'm always eager to try out books that deal with memory loss, as I've only read a handful of them which have worked out for me, I'm glad to see that the love triangle aspect wasn't too annoying, I was little worried after reading the blurb. Glad you enjoyed this overall Brandi!
ReplyDeleteI do love mysteries but knowing that the eventual reveal will cause problems makes it feel like you're waiting for a hammer to drop the entire read. That tension can be tough depending on how it's handled. It can make me too on edge to enjoy the book. Great review, Brandi! :)

ReplyDeleteI guess there are some memories I would like to erase (because they embarrass me) but it's life...and there are more important things to deal with than thinking about embarrassing memories, so I just shake it off. ;D
