Review: The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead

The Indigo Spell (Bloodlines, #3)
The Indigo Spell (Bloodlines #3) by Richelle Mead
In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch--a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood--or else she might be next.
Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, the Bloodlines series explores all the friendship, romance, battles, and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive—this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone’s out for blood.

Indigo Spell cast its spell on me, that is for sure. From the first page, I didn't want to put it down. Adrian is hot as ever and comes out with lines like this:
Because I can't help doing it. And hey, if I keep loving you, maybe you'll eventually crack and love me too. Hell, I'm pretty sure you're already half in love with me." p. 30
Remember--no matter how ordinary things seem between us--I'm still here, still in love with you, and care about you more than any other guy, evil or otherwise, ever will. p. 30
So, yeah. I am glad that he is in the process of getting his happy ending. Because, surely Richelle can't be that cruel and not eventually get these two together, right?? Right???
The pacing is awesome. There are multiple plot threads going on, but it kept me on the edge of my seat and I began to see how they all worked together to help Sydney become stronger and discover who she wants to be, instead of who she has been told to be.
There are some steamy moments, that I wanted to read over and over... To put myself in Sydney's body because then Adrian would be talking to me, touching me, thinking about me, and loving me.
I should have just stopped before the last two pages, because then I would have been okay waiting a bit for Fiery Heart. (well, who am I kidding? Even if neatly tied up, I would still want more Adrian and Sydney) But of course, Richelle had to be a little mean and throw a huge obstacle in their path. One that I have no idea how they are going to combat.
Non-stop awesomeness going on. There is magic, hot Adrian, a new mystery character, kick ass Eddie, and Sydney is changing so much! I loved watching her come into her own, and want to think for herself.

Bottom Line: Great installment in a must read series.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Do you think you would have a hard time choosing love over things you've been taught your whole life?

  1. Ahaha, sweet review, Brandi! I always had a soft spot for Adrian, but I'm one book behind in this series so far. Need to catch up!

  2. Love over things I've been taught. Yeah, I do simply because I tend to avoid things that make me uncomfortable, so if I was taught one way..i probably wouldn't get close enough to develop feelings..but if I did fall in love, love would win every time because I am totally loyal to my peeps.

  4. I'm pretty sure I'd have trouble choosing love over what I've been taught my whole life-that stuff sinks in and has guided me for years. Would I risk it all for love? I'm just not sure.

  5. I LOVE Adrian! He was chalked full of awesomeness in this book but then again isn't he always? Fondue, Jet, Hopper, B&B, t-shirt painting, the tattoo, oh I just love him! I do think it would be hard to overcome a life long way of thinking but for Adrian it would be easy!!!!!!!

  7. I completely agree with you. I finished this one in one sitting, and I can never get tired of Adrian. He truly shined in this one, but so did Sydney.
Great review! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

  9. I just bought this! I'm going to make sure I read all of them again before this. I'm not sure I would have a tough time choosing love over everything I have been taught. I would hate to disappoint my family and friends but if I thought the love was true then I would pick love.

  14. Loved that you're being charmed by the Indigo Spell :)

I guess in the end, we all hope love will win - long long time ago our ancestors thought the Earth was flat and they taught their young ones that the Earth was flat but eventually someone figured out the truth and nobody now believes the Earth is flat. I guess we've been waiting for a long time for Sydney to come to terms with who she is and in a way, our wishes are granted in this fabulous installment - yay!!

  15. I loved this book so much! I agree, I wish I could unread those last two pages, because now I'm freaking out about the next book! But I think I'd be freaking out anyway. :-)

To answer your question, I would definitely find it hard to abandon what I've been taught for love, especially in Sydney's case where it's a lifestyle, beliefs, and her career all on the line for love.

    Amazing review!

  17. LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOVE THE ADRIAN QUOTES! I am in LOVE with that man and I just can't wait to get my hands on this book as soon as my copy arrives! lol ;p I can't wait to see how Sydney further develops and how the plot continues. Super excited to read this! :) I'm glad you enjoyed this!

    Fabulous review, Brandi! :D

And for your question, honestly, I think I would have trouble, cause the things are a part of your life..almost a part of who you are, and it would be hard to break the habit, so to speak But if it was my true love, after some coaxing I think I would eventually get some sense. LOL ;p

  27. I can't wait for the next book too! But I kind of don't mind Sydney's choices-- coming from her background, her resistance is realistic.
