Torn (Torn #1) by K.A. Robinson
Chloe hasn't had the best life. With a mother who is gone more often than not, she has had to raise herself. After graduating high school, she leaves to start a new life away at West Virginia University with her best friends Amber and Logan, determined to leave her demons in the past.
On her first day, she meets a stranger who takes her breath away at first sight. Until she met Drake, no one had ever sparked her interest. Now this tattooed and pierced bad boy is all she can think about, no matter how hard she fights it.
Falling for Drake was never part of her plans, but when it happens, things seem to do anything but fall into place.
Dealing with a tragic past, Drake has never cared about anyone else but himself and his band. But when Chloe takes the empty seat next to him in class, things start to change. Instantly drawn to her, he begins to wonder if one girl can take a cold hearted womanizer and change every part of him?
Long hidden feelings are revealed and friendships tested to the brink.

I loved Chloe. New adult characters like her make me love and keep going back to the genre even when others are burned out. I love her mixture of tough and vulnerable. How she relies on a select few but because life hasn't always been on her side, she does have a wall. It really speaks to me and I can relate with her because I see so much of myself in her, even though I am not as tough as I would like to be.
Drake is bad boy personified on the outside, and I love how he makes Chloe melt with a glance. And how he teases her because of an embarrassing and clumsy moment but he isn't cruel about it. He keeps it real, and I like that. I wanted to know what was beneath his surface and I get to find out a little at a time.
I liked Amber and Logan, but do wish that Logan didn't have the whole I am your best friend with a secret crush vibe and now that there is a guy showing interest, I am going to make things awkward and sort of do something about it, but too little too late. He really does seem like a nice guy, and he would make his own great love interest in another book, and that very well might be book two in this series, but it did make me roll my eyes a little bit. I wish it could be a purely friend thing like it appeared at first. But I guess in the end, it played such a big role in the plot, and in character growth of Chloe, that it was inevitable. While on this subject though, there is cheating, and I have issues with that, just like many of my readers, but even though I wished she wouldn't have, it didn't turn me against Chloe or the story.
The emotions and secondary characters were really well written in this one. Topping it off with some hot scenes, a band that I want to know more about, a romance that I can't get enough of, and wanting to know more about Amber and Adam as well as see Logan get his happy ending and know what happens with Chloe and the situation from her past, I just have to get my hands on the next one.
My question to you, my lovely readers:
Have you ever known someone in a band?
I haven't heard of this one but emotional reads tent to be my favorite. Great review, Brandi :)
ReplyDeleteI'm always on the lookout for NA books which will surprise me and this book sounds perfect. The fun secondary characters I also find highly appealing! Great review Brandi! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't read much NA, but it's precisely because they don't surprise me anymore, so it's good to know that this one is different.
ReplyDeleteI love that all the characters are so wonderful.
I still haven't read a NA
ReplyDeleteSounds pretty good. You had me at steamy though. hehe.
ReplyDeleteNA is something I'm always on the fence about, because I feel a lot of the time so much attention is focused on having steamy scenes, that the characters end up being bland and the relationship between them (beyond sex) is just a little eh.
ReplyDeleteThis one sounds like it actually focuses on the characters as well, rather than just the steamier stuff, so yay!

ReplyDeleteIt's great that such a touchy plot was handled well. I'm glad you enjoyed Torn!
ReplyDeleteI really need to read more NA books now! I'll try one soon.
ReplyDeleteGreat characters and romance - sounds like an excellent NA story!
ReplyDeleteAwesome review :D
I like tough but vulnerable female characters. This makes me want to pick it up. Haven't read much NA, but might have to try this one.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds wonderful, and I am far from burned out by NA..but I mix my genres up. A steady diet of anything will make you sick..LOL
ReplyDeleteThis does sound pretty good! I'm not real big on NA contemporary but this sounds like one I might like.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds perfect for when I'm in the mood for 'steamy & emotional', Brandi.
ReplyDeleteOh, I like this cover :D Sounds like an awesome book. Glad you mostly enjoyed it. <3 and that the romance was good :D thank you for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear this struck such a strong chord with you in spite of NA burnout. It sounds like an interesting story, and I do love steaminess and incorporating music/bands.
