Letter to 16 year old self
Dear Andi,
I’m writing to you from the year 2013. You just turned 39. I’m sure it’s hard for you to picture yourself so close to 40, but here you are! There are some things I wanted to talk to you about yourself that I think you should know.
First, you should be proud of how far you’ve come. I know school has been rough for you, and growing up with a disability has made you feel left out of some things. But you need to know that living with your heart defect has made you very strong, and enabled you to persevere through a lot in your life.
You are currently in a very happy place in your life, doing what you always dreamt of doing, even though I know it’s a dream that hid in the back of your mind. I would love to tell you what that is so you can take an easier path to get here than I did, but I think part of what brought me to where I am today is the path I walked. So, I’m sorry, but I’m not going to tell you what that is. All I can tell you is that there will be some bumps in the road, but you will get over them and become stronger because of them.
I also wish I could tell you about the current people in your life, but again, I believe you need to wait to meet them at the right time. But believe me; some of your dreams are going to come true.
What I will tell you is what everyone else tells you already, so it shouldn’t hurt either of us: Start exercising and eating better! You’ll feel so much better, and frankly, so will I. But, I know you probably won’t listen to me. I still have my moments when I don’t eat properly either, so I guess I should take my own advice before pushing it on you. I guess I’m hoping if you do it for us, we’ll both be better off.
I miss you sometimes, and think of you often. Keep your head high. Reach for the stars, and make your dreams come true.
I love you.
Love,
Andi

ReplyDeleteSounds good even if it does put me in mind of Stephen King's Carrie.
