Review: Deliverance by C.J. Redwine

Deliverance (Defiance, #3)
Deliverance (Courier's Daughter #3) by C.J. Redwine
Everything hangs in the balance, and nothing is certain: Rachel has been kidnapped by enemy forces and is being taken to Rowansmark while Logan, imprisoned and awaiting trial, is unable to leave Lankenshire. Separated from each other and their Baalboden comrades, each must find a way to achieve what they desperately want: to rid their world once and for all of the Commander and the tech that controls the deadly Cursed One.
Fighting through her pain and embracing the warrior she’s become, Rachel will do whatever it takes to escape her enemies’ clutches and join Logan in his fight. But when she learns a secret that changes everything, she realizes that escaping Ian and his tracker friends is no longer an option if she wants to save the people she loves. Instead, she’ll have to destroy Rowansmark from the inside out—if she can survive the journey through the Wasteland.
Logan needs allies if he wants to thwart Rowansmark’s power grab and rescue Rachel. But securing allies will mean betraying his beliefs and enlisting the help of the man he hates more than anyone: Commander Jason Chase. Driven by his fierce love for Rachel and his determination to make their world safe, Logan may be just the weapon the city-states need to defeat the Cursed One.
But as Rowansmark bears down and uneasy alliances are tested, will Rachel and Logan’s love for each other be enough to surmount the unbelievable odds against them?

I wanted to read Deliverance because I have loved not only the beautiful covers but the story and world inside the book. The first and second books were fast paced and great reads for me and I def wanted to read the conclusion to this enjoyed series.

I will admit that I didn't get into it right away because I didn't remember the details of what had happened in the first two books and my reviews didn't help much. I could recall Logan and Rachel as well as Willow, but the rest were a bit fuzzy. I really need a site that will tell me what happened in the first books of series since it is so long in between and maybe the beginning wouldn't have been so slow for me. I skimmed a bit especially with Logan's part because even though I know that I liked the romance with him and Rachel, I didn't remember his characteristics and he was under a lot of pressure and I think that those below him asking every two seconds if he has a plan got on my nerves a bit.

Once it got to the Rachel story line, I got a little more into it, but I didn't remember the details about the trackers and what her deal was with her captors besides of course, that she was kidnapped. It is so hard when the kidnapped scenario happens in books though, because I am all about some steam and chemistry and of course you don't get as much of that when separated. But you do get a different kind of character development and I know that its a key element to so many stories.

It was full of some really hard scenes, on the side of gory but so heartbreaking. Some of the characters are hard to like, but I appreciate how this one really looks at motivations and how similar pasts can be but just a few different choices along the way can shape future decisions and actions. On top of that the theme of forgiveness that Rachel learned while being captive and how important it can be even the simplest kindess can mean to someone else.

The story tied up the plots and gave me satisfaction with reading, although I think that I would have liked it even more if there were more recap in the beginning, because there is no way that I had time to reread no matter how much I enjoy the series or books before it. Feeling lost and forgetting a bunch of the side characters as well as referenced past events that are seriously impacting the characters choices made me continue to be a bit lost and knowing that I was missing out on development and even more resolution than if I read back to back, had better memory retention, better recap, or a chance to reread.

Bottom Line: Enjoyable, but forgot a lot and was a bit lost. Still loved Rachel and Logan and appreciated their ending.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
How do you feel when going into conclusion books of series?

  1. Recaps are MUSTS IMO, especially in finales. I don't understand why an author would chose to breeze over previous crucial details because yeah, not everyone has time to re-read. If I had to revisit old series everytime a new installment came out, I'd never tackle anything new.

  2. Gosh I got to read this & book 2 back to back then. Ill set my expectations low so I wont be disappointed as much. Series endings are hit or miss for me

  3. I agree. I could really use a recap site. Since I try not to give spoilers in my reviews, they don't help much with giving me the gist of what happened in prior books. I'm glad this series does give a satisfactory ending!

  4. I really want to read this one but I remember being so long in the second as well because I just couldn't remember anything and the book gave no recap :( I don't remember much of what happened in Deception so now I'm really worried about how lost I'll be going into this one!

  5. That's always the tricky part about series / trilogies - trying to remember what happened in the previous books!

I keep debating whether or not to check out this trilogy. It sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if it's my type of book.

    Nice honest review!

See, with recaps I'm a little on the fence, but in series', and especially Fantasy, do need a little recap in the beginning, especially the series enders too, and it just shows how that does effect how you feel on the book. I hate reading the end of a series, I sometimes avoid the last one for a while, like I did with The Forever Song, didn't read it until like a month or two after it was out.

  8. It seems there are so many series finales this year and I have binge read a few. This is one trilogy that I have been wanting to read, I wonder if you would have enjoyed it more if the details were fresher.

I can see how it could be hard for an author to know how much to recap and how much is just over repetition. Still, I'm like you, I like at least a small bit to help me remember. I do need to check out this series.

  10. too bad for the biginning. I always have the same problem about remembering things. But well it looks ok.

  11. I hate when it's been so long since you have read the first book of a series so while you read the next ones, you feel a little lost because it's hard to remember what happened last time.

  12. It's rough when you forget a lot of what happens in the previous books. It sounds like it this ends up a pretty good read though. Great review.

  13. I guess it's probably good that I haven't started this series yet. I've wanted to for ages but maybe now I can read them closer together and have an easier time following everything.

  14. I need my recaps as well, especially when it the last book in a series and it's been awhile - my memory need a slight refresher. This sounds like it was still enjoyable and wrapped up most threads, so that great - no lose ends. Thanks for sharing Brandi :)

  15. Beautiful review! I understand about wanting the helpful reminders in the beginning of a book, those never hurt. I am currently reading the last book in a series I have come to love dearly--Ranger's Apprentice--and I am just... so sad. It's such an awesome series.

  16. I still haven't started with this series even though I have heard interesting things about it. Too bad it didn't have recaps as I really need them if the previous book came out long time ago. Great review :)

  17. Definitely understandable about wanting recaps! Sometimes it's so hard to remember every little detail in books! I will hopefully get around to the second book, and I will pick this one up as well.

    Great review!

  18. Hmm, it is hard when the author doesn't do some kind of recap. Usually if I re-read the last few chapters of the previous book it all comes pouring back. Bummed this didn't wow you but glad you enjoyed aspects.

  19. That's why I enjoy that little bit of a recap...the one that doesn't tick you off if you're reading back to back and seems like you're just re-reading the previous book, but the one that helps pick you up on all the large points to get back into the story. Sorry you felt lost! I have mixed feelings about conclusions. If I love the series, I want to devour it as quickly as possible because I have to know how it all ends, but then I'm usually disappointed that I read it so fast because it's all over.

  20. I am bad at reading a series because I can easily forget the details. I have a few series in my bookshelves with 1-2 books missing. I'm waiting until I've the series complete so that I can read them back to back.

  21. When I read a new release of a series, I usually keep the previous installments close by so that I can go back to them if I feel lost. It can definitely be a little confusing when things aren't recapped in the book. Glad to see that you still enjoyed the story and loved how things were wrapped up. Thanks for sharing.

  22. Oh, I'm sorry this one wasn't as good as you expected, Brandi. That's always disappointing. I'm glad you found some enjoyable things about it though. Nice review.
