DNF: Grasping at Eternity (Kindrily #1) by Karen Amanda Hooper

Grasping at Eternity (The Kindrily, #1)
Grasping at Eternity (Kindrily #1) by Karen Amanda Hooper
Leave it to Maryah Woodsen to break the one rule that will screw up eternity: Never erase your memories.
Before entering this life, Maryah did the unthinkable—she erased. Now, at seventeen years old, she’s clueless that her new adoptive family has known her for centuries, that they are perpetually reincarnated souls, and that they have supernatural abilities. Oh, and she's supposed to love (not despise) Nathan, the green-eyed daredevil who saved her life.
Nathan is convinced his family’s plan to spark Maryah's memory is hopeless, but his love for her is undying. After spending (and remembering) so many lifetimes together, being around an empty version of his soulmate is heart shattering. He hates acting like a stalker, but has no choice because the evil outcast who murdered Maryah in their last lifetime is still after her.
While Maryah’s hunter inches closer, she and Nathan make assumptions and hide secrets that rip them further apart. Maryah has to believe in the magic within her, Nathan must have faith in the power of their love, and both need to grasp onto the truth before they lose each other forever—and discover just how lonely eternity can be.

I wrote a post awhile back about negative reviews, and how I don't review if I don't finish, and a very wise blogger pointed out that knowing what a blogger doesn't like can be valuable to publishers and authors too. Then another blogger mentioned she did a did not finish post and I thought it was a great idea. That isn't to say that the writing is poor or the characters are poorly constructed, it's personal on my end. So, here we go:

This should have been powerful, but I didn't connect with the main character. Her emotions were well written, I just didn't feel them personally. I was confused with the dual perspective and the character I liked, her brother Mikey was killed. I mean, I should have been prepared because that is what the synopsis already told me, but something just didn't click with me.

  5. Darn. I got this from NetGalley a couple of weeks ago because it sounded promising. Sorry to hear you didn't like it. We'll see if I do or not

  6. oddly enough, I JUST finished this book and immediately moved on to book 2 in the series. I gave the first one a 5 star review b/c it was SUPER my type of read :) I understand your not clicking with a book comment though, I have a certain author that many love that I just can't get through her books...her style just isn't my style. It happens

  7. I do appreciate DNF reviews; it can help people see if a book was pushed aside for something they'd hate or not.

  10. Ha! I'm surprised to see you DNFd a book. I too avoid writing negative reviews but once in a while we just meet books we cant get in to.

    Yay for honesty!

  11. I DNF'd this one as well. I couldn't keep straight who was who and I didn't connect with the characters, any of them. I really wanted to like this one, too. I liked the synopsis and the cover. But we can't like everything. I've changed my idea about doing DNF's and negative reviews. If I want to be honest, I should include those.

  15. Agreed - it's always nice to get views on books, even if they go unfinished. I want to know why you didn't finish them! So thank you - very helpful review.

  16. I was sad at the beginning when her family was murdered. I also loved Mikey and he does reincarnate at the end of this book. Since you DNF I figured I could just tell you. So I'm assuming he will come back in the second book which I haven't had a chance to read. I like reincarnation but the thing I didn't like about this was that we didn't know why she erased her memories and then everyone treated her badly for it. I did love the idea of all these people sticking together and coming together over and over. The beginning was slow so I completely understand the DNF. It took me awhile to get into it.

  17. I really love how you explain why a book didn't work for you-that is such a good strategy and it highlights why a book may work for someone else with different taste.
