It could never happen to me. It is the famous last words. I mean, it is like cancer, teenage pregnancy. You know people it has happened to, and with head knowledge, you know it can happen to you. But at that age, we think we are invincible really, and I remember thinking that it would never actually happen to me. That is on the first page of this book. This shouldn't have happened to *me.*
And I think that is why books like these are important, to show that it can and does happen. No matter how smart, no matter if you are a virgin, and sometimes even if you use birth control.
And yes, if you haven't noticed from my reading patterns, I am obsessed with books like these. The issue books are right up my alley.
This is the 2nd book in a row that is written in 3rd person, but this one is done better than the other. I got lost in Grace's head, and when it switched to Jennifer it jarred me for a second, and then I was into her line of thought.
One issue I had though was that Grace's parents are involved, but extreme. They lectured her for getting a B and said they would be wasting money if she went to a second tier school. And that is just the beginning. The way that they pushed her around, tried to make decisions for her and force them on her, and were generally mean people, did not sit well with me at all. As a parent to two girls, I can imagine that it's a huge shock, but no amount of shock justifies how they treated her.
The neighbor Helen though, is an amazing addition to the plot. She is a survivor of the concentration camps, so she knows suffering but she had chosen to do good things as a result. She wanted to help others, and every interaction with Grace really just shines. She helps to balance the negativity and bad treatment from Grace's parents and really just laces hope and kindness into the story.
Charlie, Helen's nephew, is awesome. He is kind, gentle and patient. He doesn't judge her and is a great friend, and along with Jennifer, helps keep Grace sane. I loved his character, he is everything a guy should be, and I def have a book crush.
The ending is perfect for the book and left me with this feeling of hope and peace, that Grace had learned so much and developed so much as a character. She made the best decisions for her, and was working on loving herself so that her other relationships would fall into place. While not everything was 100% neatly tied up, it was the best ending for the book, and it held hope and promise showed the most likely course for the characters.

Bottom Line: Screwed tugs at your heart, and examines teenage pregnancy with a fresh voice.

Author Theresa McClinton
A long time enthusiast of things that go bump in the night, Theresa started her writing career as a journalism intern—possibly the least creative writing field out there. After her first semester at a local newspaper, she washed her hands of press releases and features articles to delve into the whimsical world of young adult paranormal romance.

Since then, Theresa has gotten married, had three terrific kids, moved to central Ohio, and was repeatedly guilt tripped into adopting a menagerie of animals that are now members of the family. But don’t be fooled by her domesticated appearance. Her greatest love is travel. Having stepped foot on the soil of over a dozen countries, traveled to sixteen U.S. states—including an extended seven-year stay in Kodiak, Alaska—she is anything but settled down. But wherever life brings her, she will continue to weave tales of adventure and love with the hope her stories will bring joy and inspiration to her readers.
The Stone Guardian

When myth becomes reality, reality becomes a nightmare.
Like any other teenager in America, Ashley just wants a normal life. But growing up in an orphanage for the insane is anything but normal. After endless therapy and increasing medication, her nightmares have only gotten worse.

Probably because they’re not nightmares.

When Ashley’s mysteriously abducted, she finds a reality even less normal than the orphanage. And she discovers something else—she’s no ordinary orphan. Faced with enemies thought to only exist in fairy tales, Ashley discovers she possesses a powerful Maya bloodline. She’s the daughter of an ancient Maya Guardian, whose duty is to protect the Stone of Muuk’ich, an enchanted relic blessed by the gods. But first she must get it back from Sarian, a power-hungry demigod who slaughtered the last guardian—Ashley’s mother. Without the stone, all will be lost.

When she meets Arwan, a hot Belizean time bender, his delicious olive skin and dark eyes make her feel a little less alone. But his gentle whispers and reassuring touch might not be all they seem. How can she balance love and duty when it’s up to her to prevent the rising of the underworld? Especially when the guy she loves might be its crown prince…

Letter to your teenage self—Theresa McClinton

Dear Theresa,

Right now you’re thirteen-years-old, and you have no idea that at twenty-seven you’ll be asked to write a letter to yourself as a teenager. There are so many things I want to tell you, but I will try not to give too much away because I want you to experience life that formed you into the person you are—me. I think “we” turned out pretty great; so in hopes some advice will come in handy, here it goes.
When you’re thirteen, I swear life isn’t coming to an end when the kid who lives down the street doesn’t like you. I know, he’s cute. But he grows up to be someone you would never see yourself with, so you’ll be so much better off. Still, the experience of feeling hurt will help you better understand the concept of self-respect, so carry on.
This may shock you, but when you’re fourteen, you’ll move off Kodiak Island to North Carolina, where you’ll go from punk-rock, camping, midnight bonfires and partying much too young, to a small town with blonde country girls speaking in heavy southern accents, spoiled rotten kids living with their rich parents, and ‘bring your tractor to school day’ once a year. As much of an alien planet you’ll think it is, don’t worry. There are some pretty cool people there and you’ll get to know them.
In high school you’ll get a crappy job working as a waitress, start smoking (gross, I know. But you do end up quitting) and start driving. Your first car will be a Toyota Paseo. Never heard of it? Neither have most of the mechanics you’ll take it to. That’ll be fun.
Two years later you’ll fall hard for a guy who doesn’t appreciate you, and who goes off and falls in love with a younger girl. You’ll be surprised how much a broken heart can hurt, and it’ll be another year before you finally decide to move on, though walking away is the hardest thing you’ll ever have to do. That will stick with you for some time, but don’t worry. It gets better. Way better, because not long after that, you’ll meet your soon-to-be husband.
Don’t freak out. Marriage isn’t scary.
But it is hard at first because you’ll only have one car, and he’ll still be going to school. You’ll take a job as a nanny, which helps pay the bills. Even though you dreamt of being a journalist or news broadcaster when you grew up, you don’t have the money to pay for college, and your new marriage brings you across the country to a state you’ve never even visited.
You grow to love where you live, and even though you had a really difficult time right after you move, you soon learn that living life for the right reasons makes every day way more exciting.
But here’s where things get really tough. Like, real world tough. Someone really close to you passes away, and it’s one of the hardest parts of your life yet. You’ll miss him, you’ll cry over him, and your heart will ache every time you watch your kids play, knowing they’ll never have that person in their lives again. I can’t tell you the age old saying that time heals all wounds, because so far it hasn’t. But at least you’ll have memories.
So my big advice to me as a teenager? Don’t be so fast to sell yourself short. Realize you deserve the best, and demand it. Work really, really hard, because even though it sounds so cliché, nobody will hand you your dreams without you chasing them down and taking them by force. You’re a pretty great mom, a loyal wife, but not such a good cook—so start working on that now.
Someday you’ll be in a career you love, and at twenty-seven years old, you’ll be a mommy of three kids, living in a house you’ve made your home, sitting at a computer, writing this article, and dreaming about what the next decade will bring.

Sincerely,

Theresa McClinton

This definitely was an emotional book about a powerful subject. The After Girls is in 3rd person but gives the perspectives of Syd and Ella. It starts right after their other best friend Astrid kills herself.
As most of you know, this is a subject that is close to my heart because of my dad, and I think that their guilt, anger, and grief is well written and realistic. I connected with them because although everyone grieves differently, I saw myself in them. The feelings of being lost, and most of all questioning. Why did they do it? Why did they leave me? Could I have done anything about it.
My biggest complaint is that I didn't get to know Astrid before. I know that would probably take away from the mystery surrounding her death because if I were in her head then I would know what lead up to it. But getting to know her second hand through Ella and Syd's memories takes away a bit of the heart wrenching element that it didn't quite achieve. Don't get me wrong, their grief was still palpable, I just felt a slight disconnect because I didn't know her.
I also got Syd and Ella confused sometimes. I am really not sure why because they are two way different personalities, I guess there just wasn't that distinct voice that 1st person gives. And all the boys, I got them mixed up at times too, who was a friend, who wasn't, if someone was actually two timing or what. I think that this confusion set in about the same time that I started taking pain meds for my wrenched back, so that is all on me.
The mystery and suspense was good. I figured out most of it a bit before Ella did, but I was in the dark right with her, wondering where these texts and feelings were coming from.
The friendship in this one was good. I loved that theme. Even though it was rightfully strained because of Astrid's death, they still had each other's backs, and helped even when requests bordered on that crazy line.

Bottom Line: Packed with emotion, and suspense.

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. I also feature books that may have already released, but I am anxiously waiting to read.

This week, I'm featuring:
3:59
Josie Byrne's life is spiraling out of control. Her parents are divorcing, her boyfriend Nick has grown distant, and her physics teacher has it in for her. When she's betrayed by the two people she trusts most, Josie thinks things can't get worse.
Until she starts having dreams about a girl named Jo. Every night at the same time—3:59 a.m.
Jo's life is everything Josie wants: she's popular, her parents are happily married, and Nick adores her. It all seems real, but they're just dreams, right? Josie thinks so, until she wakes one night to a shadowy image of herself in the bedroom mirror – Jo.
Josie and Jo realize that they are doppelgängers living in parallel universes that overlap every twelve hours at exactly 3:59. Fascinated by Jo's perfect world, Josie jumps at the chance to jump through the portal and switch places for a day.
But Jo’s world is far from perfect. Not only is Nick not Jo's boyfriend, he hates her. Jo's mom is missing, possibly insane. And at night, shadowy creatures feed on human flesh.
By the end of the day, Josie is desperate to return to her own life. But there’s a problem: Jo has sealed the portal, trapping Josie in this dangerous world. Can she figure out a way home before it’s too late?
From master of suspense Gretchen McNeil comes a riveting and deliciously eerie story about the lives we wish we had – and how they just might kill you.

Review: In Honor by Jessi Kirby

In Honor
In Honor by Jessi Kirby
Honor receives her brother’s last letter from Iraq three days after learning that he died, and opens it the day his fellow Marines lay the flag over his casket. Its contents are a complete shock: concert tickets to see Kyra Kelly, her favorite pop star and Finn’s celebrity crush. In his letter, he jokingly charged Honor with the task of telling Kyra Kelly that he was in love with her.
Grief-stricken and determined to grant Finn’s last request, she rushes to leave immediately. But she only gets as far as the driveway before running into Rusty, Finn’s best friend since third grade and his polar opposite. She hasn’t seen him in ages, thanks to a falling out between the two guys, but Rusty is much the same as Honor remembers him: arrogant, stubborn . . . and ruggedly good-looking. Neither one is what the other would ever look for in a road trip partner, but the two of them set off together, on a voyage that makes sense only because it doesn’t. Along the way, they find small and sometimes surprising ways to ease their shared loss and honor Finn--but when shocking truths are revealed at the end of the road, will either of them be able to cope with the consequences?

Even the subject matter screamed to me: read me. I am a sucker for emotional books like this, and the road trip is an added bonus. It is so important that it talks about the death of a marine, and how the family feels after the loss from the one they loved that made such a sacrifice. I know this is fiction, but there are so many true stories, and feeling the emotion and getting inside Honor's head--if it makes me understand even a little bit, then it has done an important service.
Being inside Honor's head was amazing ride. She experienced grief but she also was trying to work through it in a way to remember and honor her brother. That lead her on quite and adventure and she discovered so many things, about herself and about life, even about Finn, her brother.
Rusty, oh Rusty. He is so rough around the edges and there were moments when he was so insensitive and I just wanted to smack him. And then the next he was deep or kind and I wanted to hug him. I realize that he was going through the loss of his best friend as well, and that brought out to extremes the rough edges that were there before, but not as hurting to other people.
I loved the interactions with Wyatt, a random, very sweet, understanding guy that takes her on an adventure. The possibility of love was palpable, but it wasn't meant to be obviously since they meet in the middle of nowhere and are going different directions. It was sweet, and also helped Honor learn about herself.
The ending itself was also well done. The secrets that Honor found out, and the guilt that she felt were all an emotional roller coaster. But there was a sweet friendship with hope of more, something that I wasn't sure I wanted to happen, but ended up being thrilled about.

Bottom Line: This is a sweet, yet emotionally packed book about loss, love, grief and healing.

Spirit (Elemental, #3)
Spirit by Brigid Kemmerer
With power comes enemies. Lots of them.
Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He’s learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can’t seem to afford any allies.
He’s up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait.
Then there’s Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She’s not hostile. She’s bold. Funny. Hot. But she’s got an agenda, too.
With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means he’ll have to find someone he can trust…

It was great getting to be in Hunter's head and figure out where he was coming from as well as getting to meet a new character.
Spirit is just as packed with action as the others, and has the emotional hook. There were several scenes where I felt so bad for Hunter. Bad things just happened to him over and over, and I can see where his confusion and not knowing who to trust comes from. I did get tired of the back and forth do I or don't I, but I did completely understand where his head and heart were.
There are some smoking hot scenes in this one too, and I enjoyed them even though they were cloaked in, for the most part, head games.
I mostly just loved being back in the Merrick's world and seeing what is going on with them and the trials that they bond together to overcome. I miss being in their heads though. Hunter I know is an extension of that, but still.
The secrets that come to light in this one are good, and I suspected a few, but others just threw me for a loop.
The pacing was good, and there was always something going on whether the action or some character development or giving a peek into the other characters we'd come to love from the previous novellas and books.
The ending left me yearning for more, and I know there is yet more trouble for the Merricks and assorted characters brewing for the fourth book, that I can't wait to get my hands on.

Bottom Line: Another great installment in the Elemental series.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Have you ever been in situations where you had no idea who to trust?

interview with Blkosiner's Book Blog

--The Twitter version

--How did you get the idea for the story?
I was watching TV. The vampires claimed to “live in secret”. I was like, “How do they travel without a Passport? How did they get a driving license/buy a house without an identity?”

--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
MOST: Alexander, Sebastian’s estranged brother and the family scientist/genius and rebel. I’d love to ask him if he’s ever been in love.
LEAST: Aurora’s office intern who flirts with her boss. I don’t respect women who don’t respect themselves.

--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
Book 2 in the Vampire Code series will be out in December 2013, but I’m also working on a stand-alone about a cryogenically frozen woman who wakes up in the future.

--What book(s) is your book’s “cousin”? (Similar kind of read, set-up or style)
I’ll quote my beta-reader and say a mash-up of “Sex and the City” and “True Blood” would make a good cousin.

--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
I always find time to read. I read instead of sleeping. At the moment I’m into new and indie authors, for obvious reasons.

--If a fairy godmother told you could be put into the world of your favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
I’d love to spend a day with Aurora in “The Vampire Code”.  After a day at work we’d rendezvous with Sebastian and his family to plot against the KKK and the Resistance.
--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
Silence. Absolute, complete and perfect silence. I have three kids, so silence is truly golden.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I wish I didn’t need to sleep anymore. Imagine how much I’d get done in a day!

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
I like to read and do research. I love learning for the sake of learning. I’ll research anything that catches my fancy. I recently researched what’s hidden behind the label of the bottled water we drink at home.

--What is one thing you would tell your 15 year old self?
You’re not fat. You’re actually skinny. You’re not ugly, you just need to blow-dry your hair. And that guy you fancy actually fancies you back you klutz!

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?
Aurora, my heroine, is clever and tough, but also young, and the young make mistakes. Watch her learn from them and from Sebastian’s experience and wisdom, and love her for it.
