Morganville Web Series: Review of 1st 2 episodes

The first two episodes caught my attention for sure. I like the set up and I connected with Claire since she was vulnerable but she still stood up to bully Monica. She is just a normal girl who is early admission to college, but arrives in town having no idea that there were vampires ruling the town. There are blood taxes and protectors and if you don't have one they call you a free range. Claire ends up at the Glass house looking for a way out of the dorm where Monica has been stealing her clothes and pushed her down the stairs.

It has some funny one liners, and I thought the acting was decent. It is a little on the cheesy side at times, and the dialogue a tad forced at times, but I still kept watching. The first is 8 minutes and 2nd at 11 so they were quick watches and I felt it was worth my time.

I haven't read the books but now my attention is perked.

Trailer:

Morganville: The Series Revitalizes Vampire Genre Just in Time for Halloween
Rachel Caine’s Snarky Vampires Perfect for Geek & Sundry’s October Line-up

Geek & Sundry: Rachel Caine is adapting her Morganville Vampires books – fifteen (15) total – for a hilarious fright fest of a web series. Each episode of the first season is expected to be 8-12 minutes long, bringing the entire season to about an hour and is freely adapted by Rachel from the first novel – Glass Houses. The first season will begin airing on Geek & Sundry October 27th with a prime schedule planned out… the hope is that the first season finale lands on Halloween day.

Thanks to a passionate fanbase who fully supported the Kickstarter project (and whose funds were then matched by Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry), Morganville Vampires: Book Series became Morganville: The Series and utilized one of the fastest, most innovative platforms for upcoming shows. Through the expansive reach of Youtube, Rachel’s fans can enjoy the show without the long wait that comes through traditional television and also, reach a worldwide audience faster. All around it made the most sense for a book series of this size and caliber.

Even though web series are seen as non-traditional formats, the casting process and scouting for film locations remains normal. Auditions were held in Dallas, LA, Austin, New Orleans and some digital (to give fans of the books a chance at the spotlight too). Rachel wrote all the character monologues for the auditions. The entire show ended up being filmed on location in Dallas, Texas in four separate venues, including a coffee shop, a turn-of-last-century Victorian home, a hospital, and a university. Nearly every episode ends with Rachel’s infamous cliffhanger endings!

Switching from book to film writing was easier than Rachel expected. The very first thing she did, ended up setting the stage for the adaptation process and made it easier for her to focus on the story she wished to tell. Rachel says, “The first thing I tried to do, since I wrote the book in 2006, was to write down everything I remembered from it without re-reading it. That was fascinating, because what I wrote down was really the core story, and that turned out to be what needed to be told in the show. So while I did go back to the book, I did it for the purposes of review, not inspiration.”

Fans might be wondering how a 10-day- shoot in April 2014 could possibly yield a story they recognize, Rachel is confident the series delivers and explains, “For practical purposes, you can only have so many characters in a show with this running time, so some characters from the novel, while really interesting, ended up not being central to the plot (like Miranda). However, I did think it was important to introduce Myrnin, who is a fan favorite character, into the mix early, so he makes a short appearance this season.”

To find out more, check out these sites for the scoop on Rachel Caine, The Morganville Vampires Books and Morganville: The Series.

Morganville: The Series – The show stars fan favorites Robert Picardo as Oliver (Star Trek: Voyager) and Amber Benson (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) as Amelie, as well as Lindsay Seidel (Claire), Jordan Taylor Farris (Shane), Haileigh Todd (Eve), Ben Easter (Michael), Nikki Donley (Hannah), Afomia Hailemeskel (Monica), Jessi Mechler (Gina), Taylor Murphy (Jennifer), Gregory Connors (Brandon) and Chase Ryan Jeffery (Myrnin). It is directed by Blake Calhoun, known for his award-winning and groundbreaking digital series Pink and Continuum, the show was filmed on location in Texas on a Blackmagic camera.

Rachel Caine –  is a fictional character herself … a pen name of writer Roxanne Conrad. Since 2003, Rachel has written in the adult Urban Fantasy genre (the Weather Warden, Outcast Season, Revivalist and Red Letter Days series) as well as in Young Adult fiction (the Morganville Vampires series and award-winning novel Prince of Shadows). She is the author of more than forty novels and many short stories, and is regularly featured in anthology collections, most recently the Charlaine Harris.

Review: Breakable by Tammara Webber

Breakable by Tammara Webber
He was lost and alone. Then he found her.
And the future seemed more fragile than ever.
As a child, Landon Lucas Maxfield believed his life was perfect and looked forward to a future filled with promise — until tragedy tore his family apart and made him doubt everything he ever believed.
All he wanted was to leave the past behind. When he met Jacqueline Wallace, his desire to be everything she needed came so easy…
As easy as it could be for a man who learned that the soul is breakable and that everything you hoped for could be ripped away in a heartbeat.

I wanted to read Breakable because I loved Easy, the romance, chemistry and emotion. It has been awhile since I read the first, which is good because its the same story, we just get Landon's perspective.

I fell just as hard for him this time as I did in the first reading. He is so hard working, loyal and working through his pain and past. I couldn't remember details from what exactly happened to him or Jackie's past for that matter so it felt like a fresh read.

It was nice to get more of an understanding behind why the Lucas vs Landon wasn't handled better. He is insecure at times and more of a sensitive soul that I would have imagined, but we get to see what has formed him into the person he is now.

We get to see Landon as a teen in high school fresh as he is dealing with the monsters of his past. We see his unlikely best friend situation as well as his emotional issues being so fresh and impacting every aspect of his life.

Things were pretty rough, and his life especially academically was going downhill, and we see the professor and long time family friend step in and give him some challenges and offer to help if he can pick himself up.

The ending was nice and I enjoyed reading this new perspective on Lucas and Jacquline's romance as well as what made Landon into who he became.

Bottom Line: Good addition to Easy.

Have you ever fell in lust/love with someone from afar?

Waiting on Wednesday, WoW

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. I also feature books that may have already released, but I am anxiously waiting to read.

This week, I'm featuring:
Kiss of Broken Glass
Madeleine Kuderick’s gripping debut is a darkly beautiful and lyrical novel in verse, perfect for fans of Sonya Sones and Laurie Halse Anderson. Kiss of Broken Glass pulses with emotion and lingers long after the last page.

In the next seventy-two hours, Kenna may lose everything—her friends, her freedom, and maybe even herself. One kiss of the blade was all it took to get her sent to the psych ward for seventy-two hours. There she will face her addiction to cutting, though the outcome is far from certain.

When fifteen-year-old Kenna is found cutting herself in the school bathroom, she is sent to a facility for mandatory psychiatric watch. There, Kenna meets other kids like her—her roommate, Donya, who’s there for her fifth time; the birdlike Skylar; and Jag, a boy cute enough to make her forget her problems . . . for a moment.

Releases:  September 9th 2014 by HarperTeen

Update: yes, I have already read, but scheduled this way back, so... it gets another 15 mins of fame here on the blog.

What are you waiting on?

It's not you: It's me: DNF Rumble by Ellen Hopkins

Rumble by Ellen Hopkins

Can an atheist be saved? The New York Times bestselling author of Crank and Tricks explores the highly charged landscapes of faith and forgiveness with brilliant sensitivity and emotional resonance.
“There is no God, no benevolent ruler of the earth, no omnipotent grand poobah of countless universes. Because if there was...my little brother would still be fishing or playing basketball instead of fertilizing cemetery vegetation.”
Matthew Turner doesn’t have faith in anything.
Not in family—his is a shambles after his younger brother was bullied into suicide. Not in so-called friends who turn their backs when things get tough. Not in some all-powerful creator who lets too much bad stuff happen. And certainly not in some “It Gets Better” psychobabble.
No matter what his girlfriend Hayden says about faith and forgiveness, there’s no way Matt’s letting go of blame. He’s decided to “live large and go out with a huge bang,” and whatever happens happens. But when a horrific event plunges Matt into a dark, silent place, he hears a rumble…a rumble that wakes him up, calling everything he’s ever disbelieved into question.

I wrote a post about negative reviews, and how I don't review if I don't finish, and a very wise blogger pointed out that knowing what a blogger doesn't like can be valuable to publishers and authors too. I think that it also helps my readers build trust that I am not just slapping good ratings on everything I read. I have a knack for picking what I will lack based on synopsis and reviews, but that even fails. Then another blogger mentioned she did a did not finish post and I thought it was a great idea. So, here we go:

So, I normally don't read books that are written in poetry, but I read a book that the poetry was just an aspect and it was more narrative and I was able to enjoy. This one I just couldn't get into. The writing is undeniably beautiful and captivating, but I just have a hard time enjoying myself when I have to dig for the meaning and that I don't have as many details filled in.
This is definitely a case where it is my reading style and preferences that prevented me from enjoying, but since I was lucky to get an advanced copy, its not for me.

That isn't to say that the writing is poor or the characters are poorly constructed, it's personal on my end.

Review: A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird, #1)
A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird #1) by Claudia Gray

Every Day meets Cloud Atlas in this heart-racing, space- and time-bending, epic new trilogy from New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray.
Marguerite Caine’s physicist parents are known for their radical scientific achievements. Their most astonishing invention: the Firebird, which allows users to jump into parallel universes, some vastly altered from our own. But when Marguerite’s father is murdered, the killer—her parent’s handsome and enigmatic assistant Paul—escapes into another dimension before the law can touch him.
Marguerite can’t let the man who destroyed her family go free, and she races after Paul through different universes, where their lives entangle in increasingly familiar ways. With each encounter she begins to question Paul’s guilt—and her own heart. Soon she discovers the truth behind her father’s death is more sinister than she ever could have imagined.
A Thousand Pieces of You explores a reality where we witness the countless other lives we might lead in an amazingly intricate multiverse, and ask whether, amid infinite possibilities, one love can endure.

Okay, cover snob warning ahead. I was first drawn to it because of the gorgeous cover art and then I read the synopsis and I have always been interested in the concept and fiction of alternate realities.

The suspense in this one is well set up. With Marguerite (Meg's) dad recently deceased, and her having grown up to a certain extent with the suspsect of the murders--Paul. Her and her crush Theo, who also was a lab assistant and around her and her family so much, take out to hunt down Paul as he stole the device that makes traveling to the parallel universes possible. Theo, a physicist himself had tinkered with old prototypes and they were able to use that to chase him.

We begin to see that things are more complicated than they seem on the surface. She has memories with Paul where he seems so kind and tender. There are also hints of a love triangle that I wasn't sure that I wanted to see played out but also just had to know about my suspicions. Theo, while he seems like a great guy with good intentions, we find out that as smart as he is, he is also got a wild side. Paul, as we see in the 2nd time jump also has a lot more to him than the surface.

I ended up loving the romance and can't wait to see how it progresses. Though it does bring up a lot of ethical dimensional travel questions that I thought was really well done. Some of the worlds they travel to almost exactly mirror the dimension they started with, changes being a little less or more tech while others leave Meg jumping into a Meg that is a russian princess. This was actually my favorite time because of the romantic themes here and how it played out. But each Meg, Theo and Paul as well as Meg's parents and whether they are alive or not changes. So if Meg falls deeply for one of the guys, but he is a different version than the one she knew in her home dimension, is she stealing from the Meg in that dimension, and how much of that guy is the same and different? Can the romance travel with each of their jumps and the different versions of themselves? It was delicious.

I did appreciate the different ways that technology, the environment as well as social leaders have stayed the same or changed in each dimension jump. One was a semi-aquatic world, another not nearly as advanced and from a different cultural stand point, another set in London. Each world was well thought out and believable.

The world building was both understandable but over my head if that makes any sense. The family was physicists and while Meg couldn't understand it all, we got to see it through her understanding, which at times was still over my head, but better than if she also understood all that Theo, Paul and her parents did. (Don't ask about that cat in the box had me snickering because I have seen science nerds debate such things)

The ending was good, but I am totally excited to read more and see where things go once all is revealed in this one.

Bottom Line: Engrossing and well done book about parallel universes with a surprising romance.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Would you want to see yourself and different way life played out if inter-dimensional travel to parallel lives were safe and possible?

Giveaway and Interview: Exclusive $25 Amazon Gift card and Grim Crush by S.L. Bynum

Grim Crush by S.L. Bynum

1. Do not interfere with someone’s death.
2. Do not become emotionally involved.
3. Do not show yourself to the living.
As a grim reaper, seventeen-year-old Xia has to follow these Rules. But when she meets Shilah, a Native American boy who can see reapers, she figures the rules don’t apply. To find out why he can see her, she pretends to be human, since carrying a scythe probably isn’t the latest teen craze. Things become unnerving as she begins experiencing first-time affection with Shilah, but she’s irreversibly drawn to him. Suddenly Xia finds herself breaking Rule Two, even while collecting dead souls behind Shilah’s back. It isn’t long before she is caught red-handed by the Angel of Death himself, and then not only is her relationship at risk, but also Shilah’s soul. And this leaves Xia wondering: can love overcome Death?

Author Bio: S. L. Bynum knew she had a creative imagination as a kid, when she would make her beanie babies go on the craziest adventures. She fell in love with writing at the age of twelve, when she wrote a rendition of The Three Little Pigs for her little brother’s homework assignment. She realized she wanted a career as an author at the age of sixteen, and when she’s not working on that dream, she works in a clothing store. S. L. Bynum is twenty-four now and besides books, she loves desserts, fashion, dancing (when she’s alone), warm weather, and playing video games. She lives in Greensboro, North Carolina with her family.

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less. Xia, a seventeen-year-old grim reaper, won’t let even Death stand in her way as she breaks the Rules of Reaping by falling for a human boy.

--How did you get the idea for the story?
I remember reading a Terry Pratchett novel featuring a grim reaper character, and I started thinking, what if a grim reaper wasn’t the usual stereotype? What if it was female instead of male, and wore a dress instead of a black robe? And then I liked the idea of a female grim reaper falling in love with a human, and I was like “This would be a paranormal romance novel. And paranormal romance is very popular these days. Plus mine is different from the usual human girl meets sexy vampire/shapeshifter/werewolf novels. I will tell the story from the non-human’s point-of-view.” So I wrote it.

--Which character would you most like to have dinner with? Probably my main character’s love interest, Shilah. Because he’s so hot! (And he has a sweet personality too.)

--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates? If all goes well, hopefully the Grim Crush sequel will be out next year!

--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read? I will always have time to read. However, I do a lot of writing-related stuff, plus I have a part-time job, so it probably takes me two or three weeks to finish one book. My favorites are the Harry Potter Series, The Legend of Drizzt novels by R. A. Salvatore, the Alice books by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, and the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini.

--If a fairy godmother said you could be put into the world of your favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
Probably one of the Harry Potter books, so I can fly on a broom and cast spells with a wand!

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Flying. I would love to travel around the world without paying for gas or an airplane ticket.

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
Dance to music alone. I’m kind of nervous to do it around other people. I also love being outside, when it’s warm out. I probably watch too many TV shows as well.

--What is one thing you would tell your 15 year old self? When that guy you like asks you to the prom, don’t be shy. Say yes.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?
I love making new friends so feel free to message me on Twitter or Facebook! Twitter: @WriterSLBynum Facebook: www.facebook.com/authorSLBynum.

It's not you: It's me: DNF Chasing Power by Sarah Beth Durst

Chasing Power
Chasing Power by Sarah Beth Durst

Lies, secrets, and magic — three things that define Kayla's life.
Sixteen-year-old Kayla plans to spend her summer hanging out on the beach in Santa Barbara and stealing whatever she wants, whenever she wants it. Born with the ability to move things with her mind — things like credit cards, diamond rings, and buttons on cash registers — she has become a master shoplifter. She steals to build up a safety net, enough money for her and her mom to be able to flee if her dad finds them again. Well, that, and the thrill of using her secret talents.
But her summer plans change when she's caught stealing by a boy named Daniel — a boy who needs her help and is willing to blackmail her to get it. Daniel has a talent of his own. He can teleport, appearing anywhere in the world in an instant, but he lies as easily as he travels. Together, they embark on a quest to find and steal an ancient incantation, written on three indestructible stones and hidden millennia ago, all to rescue Daniel's kidnapped mother. But Kayla has no idea that this rescue mission will lead back to her own family — and to betrayals that she may not be able to forgive... or survive.

Review: Sacrifice by Brigid Kemmerer

Sacrifice (Elemental, #5)
Sacrifice (Elemental #5) by Brigid Kemmerer

Earth. Fire. Air. Water.
One misstep and they lose it all. For the last time.
Michael Merrick understands pressure. He's the only parent his three brothers have had for years. His power to control Earth could kill someone if he miscalculates. Now an Elemental Guide has it in for his family, and he's all that stands in the way.
His girlfriend, Hannah, understands pressure too. She's got a child of her own, and a job as a firefighter that could put her life in danger at any moment.
But there are people who have had enough of Michael's defiance, his family's 'bad luck'. Before he knows it, Michael's enemies have turned into the Merricks' enemies, and they're armed for war.
They're not interested in surrender. But Michael isn't the white flag type anyway. Everything is set for the final showdown.
Four elements, one family. Will they hold together, or be torn apart?

I wanted to read Sacrifice because I have loved getting to know the Merrick brothers in this series. They all have their own personalities and stories as well as girls that they are in love with. But as brothers there is always the element of family and the fact that Michael helped hold them together as the oldest after their parent passed. The paranormal magic in this one is also neat, learning about each brother and Hunter's powers and how they work together. There has always been someone to oppose them though, which has added plenty of tension and action to the stories.

It was nice getting back to the world and into the head of Michael. He shoulders such a load because he has taken over guardianship of his brothers, and he wants to be a good role model for them and be there for them. In this book his livelihood, his home and sense of security in a lot of ways is ripped from him. He becomes a suspect in fires and other disasters that center around him, and I feel so much for him. He has to keep their powers a secret, and there are lots of things pointing at him as a possibility because of his and his brother's elemental powers.

We also get the point of view of Hannah, Mike's girlfriend. She has her son, and she's a fire fighter. Her dad is the marshal, so there is plenty of pressure on her in a male dominated work environment and such shoes to fill. Then as Michael is under investigation she believes to much in his innocence but has to admit that the obvious signs are pointing to his involvement. I liked her strength and loyalty as well as her responsibility. he has a son and she tries so hard to be a good mom to him even though she had him earlier in life than most.

While I liked Michael and how much he is willing to do to protect his brothers and to be there for everyone. He is fiercely loyal and has so much that should be so drool worthy, this wasn't my favorite of the Merrick books. I did like his connection with Hunter and how we get to learn more about him. There is also a surprise ally that was neat to get his perspective and how much he stepped up. There was a lack of his other brothers though. They weren't on the scene as much and even though there was a lot of Michael and he learned to accept some help after so much trying to be strong.

I totally wasn't prepared for it to end where it did, because my kindle told me there was still a good 30% left, but it is the novellas included. So, yes, I did like where this one stopped and how things were resolved for now, I just was surprised and geared up for more.

Bottom Line: Solid book moving the action and plot along.

My question to you, my lovely readers:
Have you ever been in charge of a sibling?
