Luce is too used to people leaving her life.
When nineteen year-old Luce receives an unexpected invitation from her late father’s partner, to visit the sea house at Arlington Bay, she has no idea what awaits her, or how her life is about to be turned upside down.
Jake is great at escaping.
After a year-long road trip, Jake decides to join his sister at the sea house, unprepared for facing head on all the reasons he’s been running away since his father’s death.
Gabe just wants to find his way home.
For Gabe Summers, the remote beach at Arlington Bay is his favourite surf break, the place his family calls their second home, and where he met the only girl he’s ever loved. After living in London, Gabe’s world spins off its axis when he discovers that the girl who still haunts him has returned to Arlington Bay.
As past and present converge, old hurts, fears and memories rake up, and the ties of blood, love and loss that connect Luce, Jake and Gabe, will either keep them apart, or open the way to make changes in their lives, by realising what truly matters.

Born in South Africa, Angela Jooste lives and works in Melbourne. While she loves reading and writing, she also works as a curator, and especially enjoys curating exhibitions which is another form of storytelling. A lifelong fascination with art led to studying and teaching art history at university [perhaps too many years at uni!]. Along the way, she decided she wanted to write stories about art, not academic papers. Actually, she just wanted to write stories.

For Luce, Jake and Gabe, past and present are about to converge, and the ties of
blood, love and loss will either keep them apart, or change their lives
completely.
--How did you get the idea for the story?
It developed organically. I had a clear idea of wanting to write a love story,
and about a girl dealing with grief/loss. The beach setting was there from the
start, as were the characters of Luce and Gabe [and the fact Gabe was a
surfer!]. How their story unfolded occurred as I was writing, and that’s also
how Luce’s brother, Jake, became a prominent character in the story.
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
I’d most like to have dinner with Jake – he’s fun, gorgeous, with a great sense
of humour and talented. Least would be Jake’s ex, Chloe, who can be a bit
pretentious and bitchy when she’s in a mood!
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
Yes, I’m currently working on two other books, both YA.
--What book(s) is your book’s “cousin”? (Similar kind of read, set-up or style)
Comparable books:
Melina Marchetta, 'The Piper’s Son'
Gayle Forman, 'Where She Went'
Amy McNamara, 'lovely, dark and deep'
Jandy Nelson, 'The Sky Is Everywhere'
Sue Saliba, 'something in the world called love'
Kirsty Eagar, 'Raw Blue'
--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
I read a lot! So here are a few faves:
Philip Pullman, His Dark Materials series
Isabel Allende, 'House of the Spirits'
Angela Carter, 'The Magic Toyshop'
J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter series
Rainbow Rowell, 'Eleanor & Park'
Markus Zusak, 'The Book Thief'
Meg Rosoff, 'How I Live Now'
John Green, 'The Fault in Our Stars'
William Goldman, 'The Princess Bride'
--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on
your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
I need silence when I work [and copious cups of tea!], but I love listening to
music when I’m not writing. With 'Chasing Light', I was listening to a lot of
Radiohead at the time, the albums 'Kid A', 'The King of Limbs', 'In Rainbows'
and 'Amnesiac'.
--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Flying combined with kickass ninja fighting skills [highly original!].
--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
Read, read, read! And hang with friends, listen to music, check out street art
and galleries, eat yummy sushi, watch movies…
--What is one thing you would tell your 15 year old self?
Life gets better if you focus on what you love doing.
