Giveaway and Interview: Into the Deep by Missy Fleming

Into the Deep by Missy Fleming
No one understands the fury of the ocean like Zoey.
Ten years ago, she lost her leg in a freak shark attack. On the eve of her sixteenth birthday, she has yet to accept her awkward prosthetic limb, or the fact she will always be different. Wary of the sea, and its hidden threats, she ventures to a party at the beach and winds up swept into the cool, salty water by a rogue wave.
Zoey believed mermaids were creatures of legend, of children’s stories, but it’s hard to ignore the captivating tail that appears and the sense of finally being whole. She abandons her life on land in search of answers about who she really is and where she came from.
What she discovers is a kingdom full of intrigue and danger, as well as a royal father she never knew existed. Settling into her role as a mermaid princess, she learns her family is under attack, both on land and in the water. Raging storms swell up, threatening coastal cities, and sea levels rise practically overnight, endangering the lives of everyone she loves. Determined to stop the strange phenomena, Zoey becomes caught up in the race to track down what, or who, is responsible for the terrible events.
But Zoey possesses another secret, one born of legend and more powerful than any mer or human can imagine.

interview with Blkosiner's Book Blog

--How did you get the idea for the story?
Like most little girls, I was always fascinated with mermaids and the ocean and Greek mythology. Plus, I’ve always wondered what would happen if the creatures who live in the oceans decided to fight back against humans for all the wrongs we’ve done? If some hidden power was able to accelerate global warming. Would the humans have someone down there fighting for them? Enter Zoey, a mermaid princess who grew up on land. Her ties to both land and sea make her very important.
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
In my book? Batari, an Indonesian goddess who gave up her immortal life for love. I’d love to listen to her wisdom, the history she’s witnessed over the years. I think I could learn a lot from her. I want to ask her if it was worth it to give up eternity for love. I’m not convinced yet ;)
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
My first book, Happily Never After, is a fairy tale retelling of Cinderella. Think Cinderella with ghosts and possessions. The ending is pretty shocking, too. It’s available now and the sequel, A Strange Thereafter, will be released in March 2014! Before I work on the sequel for Into the Deep, I’m working on an adult romance dealing with the consequences of 9/11. Tackling the big girl books haha.
--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
I go through phases where I read like a mad woman, then others when I don’t for a couple weeks. Right now, I’m in a drought. Actually, I’m waiting very impatiently for Fiery Heart to come out, from Richelle Mead. I have too many favorites to list, I love YA and romance but I’m also obsessed with A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones). I’ve already reread the series twice!

--If a fairy godmother told you could be put into the world of your favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
The nerd in me says Jurassic Park, only because I’d love to see a real dinosaur…without the running and screaming and biting. I’d love to be put into any of the Game of Thrones books too. People hate him, but I just wanna give Jaime Lannister a hug after he loses his hand.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?

I’m one of those weird authors who can write anytime, anywhere. I’ve always been uncomfortable with silence so I have to have the TV on or music playing. For my first book, I listened to a lot of the Finnish band, HIM. They have that moody, gothic feel that I thought fit with the setting for the book.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
To be able to close my eyes, picture any place in the world, and boom! I’m there. It’d save me money on airline prices!

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
I like to pretend I’m a photographer. I love taking pictures, especially of nature. I live in Montana so the subject matter is everywhere. Movies are a huge love of mine, as well as music. I love to read and travel. Sleeping—I haven’t been able to outgrow my love of sleeping in on Sunday mornings.
--What is one thing you would tell your 15 year old self?
Don’t try so hard to figure everything out. The world is constantly changing. Who you are now is not who you will be at 35. Learn to be comfortable with yourself. Don’t change for a boy, or a man. And never give up.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?
I’d just like to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my stories with you all. Feel free to contact me through Goodreads or through my website (which is a work in progress!).
