Dust
No Such Thing as Perfect
Backward Compatible: A Geek Love Story
--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.
A princess, an assassin, and a thief. World at war. Magic is suppressed. Nothing is true.
--How did you get the idea for the story?
I wish I could answer that, but I honestly don’t know. I woke up one day three years ago, said, “I have an idea,” and then I started writing. What I started with looks nothing like the book it is now, though, except the opening scene, so really, it was just a brief idea that became a story.
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
From my books or literature in general? I like literature in general, so I would most want to have dinner with Jane Eyre. She’s awesome. Just snarky enough without being outright mean, opinionated, strong, and independent. Yet she is also compassionate, kind, and considerate and I love her balance.
I would least like to have dinner with Christian Grey. He would say two words before I shoved a plate down his throat. J
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
I do!! Dust is still not out and will not be out until November 7, but I have something secret in the works right now. It’s likely it will be out in December unless something weird happens. I attached a teaser. It’s very vague – intentionally. I’m excited and I want to give this one time to filter out to readers. I have about 20+ WIPs, but this is the one that will be up next.
--What book(s) is your book’s “cousin”? (Similar kind of read, set-up or style)
I’m not sure. I guess it has elements of Graceling, since it’s sort of a traditional fantasy in many ways. Someone said it reminded her of The Hunger Games, but she wasn’t sure why, because it’s not dystopian or violent or really thematically linked in any way. Maybe just that Alondra is a little naïve at first, but learns to become a heroine? My husband said it reminded him of The Alchemist, in that it’s heavy on the philosophical elements and less on the action.
As a writer, I try really hard not to read books in the same style as my own writing while writing, because I just don’t want to be influenced subconsciously by them.
--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
I don’t read as much as I used to, but I used to read a ton because I was coordinating a YA library program and teaching high school English. It was important to me to read as much as possible so my students could come to me for recommendations and I had a large selection to offer them. I still do read as much as I can, but I have slowed down to enjoy the stories more.
Some of my favorite books are The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway, The Catcher in the Rye by Salinger, Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers, The Hate List by Jennifer Brown, Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver, Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins, Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor, and Shine by Lauren Myracle. I am most certainly forgetting more.
--If a fairy godmother told you could be put into the world of your favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?

Harry Potter, because obviously. J
--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
It depends on my mood. I like my playlists, though, because I choose them to set the mood I need for the story. Here’s the link to the Dust playlist, which captures the overall style I was going for when writing: http://hypster.com/playlists/user/sarahdaltry?6953930
--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Mind control. I would like to make everyone see the world in a new way and learn to empathize with others.
--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
Play Xbox and watch BBC!!
--What is one thing you would tell your 15 year old self?
The good news is that you’ll forget all about the people who seem to be making life so hard now. The bad news is that they never change, but there are others who will fill your life with better things and you can get past it.

Awesome interview :)
ReplyDeleteHaving dinner with Jane Eyre would definitely be interesting! I also look forward to seeing Dust released, and I love it when authors are constantly writing, even if it is a secret thing that they are up to. Gives us something to look forward to!
