I have done this several times on my blog. Books that just don't work for me. I know my reading style pretty well, and I can tell whether I will like the book or not accurately about 80-90% of the time. If I finish a book, then there are aspects of that book that I enjoyed. I never talk about the author in a negative way, I only say what doesn't work for me. Normally if I finish a book, I give it at least 3 stars, meaning that I liked it. For these, it just wasn't a good fit for my stylistically, but since these were sent from the publisher, I decided to give it a try.
All of these books will be or have already been offered for giveaway in hopes of finding a reader that will love them and hopefully review them.
Karen at For What It's Worth and Mary at The Book Swarm occasionally post twitter-style reviews. Karen calls hers Short and Tweet, and I am going to borrow that review style here.
That isn't to say that the writing is poor or the characters are poorly constructed, it's personal on my end.
hope you will find them to read those books and i hope you will get more good books for your self :)
ReplyDeleteYour triage is much like mine! I DNF a -lot- of books because I know what I like and if a book isn't working into that groove I don't spend my time on something I won't enjoy. I'm with you on reviewing only 3s and better, as well. It takes at least a 3 to get me to finish a book. :) Glad to hear from another picky purveyor of reviews.
ReplyDeleteNormally a reader who has to finish a book once I have started because of an ever growing TBR pile I'm seriously thinking about giving up on books that are not to my taste so love your idea of a Did Not Finish list.

I am struggling with reads lately as well, and tempted to quit, but no I keep pushing through.
ReplyDeleteI DNF a lot lately because honestly, who has the time to read bad books, but I haven't even tried any of these.
ReplyDeleteI am actually looking forward to reading The Fall and Stray, so it's a shame you didn't like them :( But I understand if they just weren't to your liking, and no one has to read something they don't enjoy. Too many good books for that ;)

I couldn't finish Stray either. But I did love The Fall although I'm usually not a horror fan.
ReplyDeleteOh its a shame these didn't work for you! But this is a great way of sharing those that aren't a good fit.
ReplyDeleteQuite a few, but good riddance
ReplyDeleteSorry these didn't work for you- but I think it is great that you try to find homes for them. Many of them sound like they just aren't your style. I liked the short and tweet style. :)
ReplyDeleteOh many books, I'm sorry they weren't for you.
ReplyDeleteI am really not a horror reader and I have learned that I just have to say no to it - even though its hard to say no to any book! :)
ReplyDeleteIt happens...better to realize early on that it's not for you than push through and have to write a negative review...not that there is anything wrong with writing negative reviews...but I just prefer to spend my time reading books I enjoy more. I just posted some of my own DNFs today if you'd like to take a look:)
ReplyDeleteI haven't had too many of these this year (2 on the last count). I understand why they didn't work for you, though.
ReplyDeleteOoo no horror here either. Good to be able to put down a book when it's just not for you.
