Interview with Evan Bollinger author of The followers

Summer Reads Giveaway Hop
The Followers
Carly stares at the frayed, bloodied tufts of hair sticking up through the fresh
dirt. Her makeup is runny, her eyes like paste, her arms sore. She tries to swallow back
the lump in her throat. She can't believe what she has done. And even more, she
can't believe now what she is doing.

--The Twitter version: tell us about your book in 140 characters or less.

When a child climbs a mystical tree, the world opens before him. And the creatures of beyond are waiting. It is time to go where no one has. And where no one should.

--How did you get the idea for the story?
From all my exploring and introspection as a young kid. I used to love running around my yard. And I used to love trees. Correction: I still do.
--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
From my story? I'd most dislike eating with the main character because there would be no food left for me. I'd most like to eat with the editorialist—simply because he could appeal to my ears with cool tidbits as the food flooded my taste buds.

--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
I like Stephen King, Albert Camus, Salinger, Terry Goodkind, Bradbury, Ludlum and academic psychology textbooks. I haven't read a book in a while though—which isn't good. If you wanna write, ya gotta read! Least that's what they tell me...
--Do you have any other works in progress? Any teasers or release dates?
Right now I'm trying to promote the 8 ebooks I've got out, and better them as best I can. Though I do always have ideas floating about...

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?

Peter Pan. Because I could fly! Fighting pirates and dealing with existential worries would not deter me. I'd still choose it. Who doesn't desire the magic of Neverland?

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on your playlist- songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
Music definitely helps. But sometimes ambient noise is just as useful. I prefer hot tea. With like... waaaay too much honey.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

I'd have to go with flying. Immortality might get you down as everybody you love passes away. But flying is just too cool. Sure, I could mess up and smack a Boeing in the face, but we can all just as easily mess up driving cars. I'd practice of course, step by step, then I'd go total nomad. Think about it: No airline costs, no TSA, and the greatest natural sights you can fathom are just a zip away.

Hopefully, I'd fly fast. Would be a terrible tragedy to take a bathroom break in the middle of the sky...
especially for everybody on the ground.

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?

Run, watch comedy central, and scour the internet for amusing factoids. And people-watch of course.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?

I try not to have boundaries in writing. I do this because writing is my way of being honest. It's my method of acknowledging the countless experiences, states of minds, emotions—whatever—that have hit my brain from one day/second to the next. It's hard for me to categorize books, because we all come at them with certain preconceived notions and expectations that ultimately inform the reading process and interpretation.

Lightning round: this or that?
Vanilla or chocolate?
Edward or Jacob?
Which one can read minds?
Hockey or soccer?
Ebook or paper?
Salty or sweet?
Beach or mountains?
Phone call or email?
Early bird or night owl?
night owl
Dog or cat?
Messy or neat?
Ninjas or pirates?
