Interview with Amber Riley, author of The Flash of a Firefly

About The Author

My Photo
Amber Riley lives in Central New York, loves snowboarding (or really anything in the snow). In her 23 years, she has traveled to four other countries and can't wait to visit more! Writing has been her passion since she was a kid, and is glad to have my first novel published to share with everyone

I had the pleasure of being contacted and asked to review The Flash of a Firefly. She was also gracious enough to answer some questions for an interview here on my blog.

--Can you give us a brief description of The Flash of Firefly in your own words?
The Flash of a Firefly is a novel about a vampire trying to escape his violent past. Kaden moved to New York City to start over after centuries of being deceived. Just as he starts to rediscover his humanity, mainly because of his love interest, the master vampire wants him back. He struggles to fight for his freedom without reverting to his old ways.

--How did you get the idea for the story and the title itself?
The idea for the story really came from Kaden. It all started with the image of him standing in the cemetery on the first page. From there, I just questioned who he was, why he was there, and all that fun stuff.
The title came from the quote “What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.” (Crowfoot) I want the readers to interpret it as they will. The biggest meaning to me is that life spans endlessly before a vampire. But, life is about more than just living.

--Which character would you most/least like to have dinner with?
I would like to have dinner with Alex. He’s my favorite character that wouldn’t want me to be on the menu. I would least like to go with the Marquis. Scary.

--What are some of your favorite books? Do you still have much time to read?
I have to make the time to read these days. That means I hardly get any sleep, but luckily the new books coming out make it worth it. The most recent favorite is Firelight. Some others are Fallen, the Sookie Stackhouse series, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Interview with a Vampire.

--If a fairy godmother told you your life could be like a favorite book for 24 hours, which book would you pick and why?
The 10th Kingdom by Kathryn Wesley. I wouldn’t call it my favorite book, but it’s the one I would most want to experience.

--Do you need anything to write (music, coffee, etc)? Are there any songs on Kindred Blood "playlist-" songs that inspired you or that were playing while you wrote?
I’m rather particular about my setting. I can’t have anyone else in the general area and there has to be background noise. There aren’t any songs that really inspired me, but my playlist for writing is huge. A few are Undead - Hollywood Undead, Life is Beautiful – Sixx AM, So Cold – Breaking Benjamin, A Beautiful Lie30 Seconds to Mars, and I Don’t Care – Apocalyptica. It dips into other music styles too, like Rascal Flatts, because different scenes have different moods.

--If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
That thing they can do in the movie Jumper. That would be amazing.

--Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
Free time? What’s that? lol
Reading, of course. I snowboard in the winter and I absolutely love to travel. I also enjoy learning languages – although when you don’t use them, you lose them.

--Is there anything else you want to add or say to your readers?
Yes – ‘Thank you!’ I love sharing my characters with everyone.
